Why does my dog temporarily collapse and shiver after barking?

Hello, sorry to hear about Shiloh. It looks like she is an older pup and the potentials for what is causing her to collapse can vary greatly (anything from neurologic in origin to orthopedic in origin). In older pets, severe muscle loss, heart problems, or other metabolic problems can contribute to their weakness and collapsing episodes. In a dog with a cough however, I would be most concerned with an underlying heart problem, then a neurologic or orthopedic problem. I would recommend seeing her veterinarian to have her evaluated and check her for any underlying heart problems, neurologic or orthopedic problems. Hope this helps and best of luck.

There are any number of medical reasons that might explain this, but the most likely would be a seizure (not all are classic grand mal), or a heart issue. The best way to determine the cause is to let your veterinarian do a full exam & blood work to rule out any metabolic or otherwise obvious reasons for the episode. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It sounds like a seizure. I would recommend video taping an episode and showing your Vet. Causes of seizures depend on age. In dogs 1-5 epilepsy is the most common cause. In puppies: toxins, infectious or congenital problems and older than 6 years of age we worry about organ failures and brain tumors. One to 2 episodes a month may warrant starting medications. I would recommend full blood work with urine, thyroid testing if older than 6 and tick testing. If all that is normal then consider starting medications. i wish Bella the best!

Sorry to hear that Bruno's lost his bark. A change in barking sound or a loss of bark can be associated with a few different conditions. While a collapsing trachea or an upper respiratory infection are certain possibilities, they are not the most common cause for this symptom. There is a condition known as laryngeal paralysis that is known to cause this symptom quite frequently. Regardless of what the cause is, it is unlikely to resolve on its own without some treatment. You should take Bruno into the vet for a physical exam and some diagnostic imaging. They will be able to tell you whether or not one of the above mentioned conditions is causing Bruno's current issues. Hope this helps!

So sorry about your dog. Besides it being caused by a seizure disorder, he could have something like laryngeal paralysis, collapsing trachea or be having a syncopal (fainting) episode from a heart problem. You could try to record one so your vet can see exactly what is happening. If the episodes continue and your vet is not able to control them, ask for a referral to a specialist for more testing. It might be a good idea to take a chest x-ray, have an ultrasound of his heart, and/or examination of his throat to look for laryngeal paralysis. Hope he gets better soon!

That may be due to a nerve degeneration that can happen in large breeds of dogs like Great Danes or Labradors. The nerve involved is commonly the laryngeal nerve and other long nerves as well (sciatic). I would recommend a check up to confirm or rule out this clinical suspicion and treat appropriately.
