How do circadian rhythms influence a dog's daily behavior and sleep?

Hi and thank you for your question on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Having a puppy is sometimes a lot like having a baby or a small child! This is okay and normal behavior for a puppy to have bursts of energy at all the wrong times it seems. Her energy will start to settle out and habits become more regular as she gets a little older. Maintain a regular schedule for Biscuit (regular times for eating, potty, etc) and she will adapt gradually to that. Be patient!

That could be completely normal and would not be a sign of any type of behavioral change or abnormality. He probably feels very comfortable sleeping anywhere in your house. Please do not hesitate to contact us again on the forum or by requesting a consultation if you have any more questions or to discuss it any further.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Luna. Yes, I would change her meal time to the mornings. Dogs typically will need to have a bowel movement after a meal. So this makes it more likey that she will need to have a bowel movement overnight. I would also take her out frequently during the day so that she will have less of need to go out at night. It has probably become a bit of a habit for her to go out at night. So it will take some time for her to adjust to the new schedule. I hope this information helps!

Hi and thanks for your request. At such young age dogs tend to spend a lot of times sleeping and commonly alternate intense activity, like playing, with many hours of sleep. 12 hours a day sleeping is not uncommon at all. If there are no other signs a part from what you reported, there is nothing to be worried about at this stage.

I'm afraid we would need quite a bit more information to be able to answer this question - circling can be normal behavior during play; a displacement behavior seen with excitement, overarousal, or frustration; a compulsive behavior; or due to a neurologic problem such as a brain tumor. Feel free to post another question with more details about his behavior (including when it tends to happen, whether Fozzie is aware of doing it or not, and whether he can be redirected to something else when he is circling), or request a one-on-one consultation with one of us if you prefer - we would be happy to try and help.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Dogs, just like people, vary in their personalities and therefore there is no one behaviour that describes a dog going through a hormonal change. The most common thing you will see is that they will seek out males to mate with, and therefore intact females going into season will be more likely to run away (unfortunately they have an increased rate of being hit by a car), and to jump over fences and explore. They also might be anxious and irritated. You will notice that there will be a discharge from the vulva that is red, and will turn straw coloured when she is more likely to accept the male. Best of luck with Zoey!

He is a baby. He might be scared at night so he does not sleep well and has to recuperate sleep during the day. You could play and exercise with him to get tired during evening and get him a clock that tics. The tic tac of the clock mimics the heartbeats of mom and can be soothing . Wrap the clock in a soft blanket nest to him. Good luck with Scott, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
