What diet is best for my 7-year-old dog's chronic yellow diarrhea?

I hate to hear this is happening. Any dogs with chronic diarrhea that does not respond to OTC diets needs to be examined by the veterinarian. She may have a parasite, a bacterial issue or she may need a prescription diet meant for dogs with dietary intolerance or food allergy. Blonca will need some diagnostics. It sounds as though you have already tried most home remedies for Sasha's diarrhea. It is encouraging that her stool firms up with a bland chicken and rice diet. If she is eating, drinking, and acting normally, you could try adding a probiotic (such as Fortiflora) into her new diet. I'm glad that you've looked into limited ingredient foods, but if a food allergy is causing her diarrhea, it can take at least 6-8 weeks to see any improvement related to the diet change. If the mudpies persist despite the probiotics and all of your bland diet attempts, a vet visit is in order. Food trials with hypoallergenic diets can be helpful in cases of inflammatory bowel disease, but do not always solve the overall problem. Sometimes a course of steroids, supplementation a certain vitamins and even antibiotics are needed to get things back on track. Given that it sounds like Snowball has a sensitive stomach, I would not recommend feeding lettuce as it is difficult to digest. Oftentimes feeding a low-fat, easily digested diet can be helpful. If the diarrhea continues I would recommend having Snowball seen by your veterinarian. There are certain blood tests that can be beneficial to determine if any additional vitamins are needed and they can help you to develop a plan for further diagnostics or management of symptoms in a long term.

It sounds like it may inflammatory bowel disease but he would need biopsies of his GI tract to diagnose. You could try a hypoallergenic diet like science diet z/d ultra and talk to your vet about low dose steroids (budesonide is a good choice for GI issues) if you haven't tried this already. Also I would have him dewormed with a broad spectrum dewormer if you haven't already. I have had good success with this regimen in some of my IBD patients. Poor Chaw! Unfortunately it's impossible to know the cause of the diarrhea by looks alone. The diarrhea could be due to many conditions including a change in diet, bacterial over growth, parasites or other even parvovirus. Chaw is very small and I recommend to have her examined by the veterinarian today. Small puppies can become very sick very fast and so need aggressive, early intervention. Make sure to bring in a sample of fresh stool. The doctor will check her for parasites and bacterial over growth. Many times a bland diet can help and then a slow, gradual introduction to the normal food can be done. A good diet in general is Royal Canin. It is low residue and highly digestible. Has he had fecal testing run at a laboratory? Sometimes if the vet looks at it themselves they can miss something (human error happens). You can actually send the test in yourself to the lab and then if there are any positive results you can consult with your vet about treatment. This is the same lab they would likely use. To get a definitive diagnosis intestinal biopsies would be needed. That being said, if owners cannot afford that, often times we do a trial of medication (I use Tylosin) to treat it and see what happens. In the meantime, I suggest you try using Fortiflora probiotic (if you have not already done so). One packet on food daily - one box will do a 30 day treatment. If he has a sensitive stomach and gets diarrhea easily, he may benefit from a prescription GI diet that is bland and easy to digest, or a hypoallergenic limited ingredient diet such as Hills z/d or Purina HA - I would suggest talking to your vet about these options to see if he/she feels that they might be helpful. It's also possible that Dylan has some other underlying medical issue causing the recurring diarrhea, such as intestinal parasites, inflammatory bowel disease, Addison's disease, etc. I would recommend having a full check-up done by your vet if this hasn't been done in the past - he/she can do blood work or other testing if needed to check for these problems and get him started on appropriate treatment if needed.
