My dog is allergic to fish oil. Can I give him chia seeds and how much?

You can add 1/4 teaspoon of chia seeds to Trip's meals. Hemp seed can be supplemented at about 1/2 to 1 teaspoon mixed into the food. Both should be given once daily in the morning meal. Monitor for GI upset or difficulty defecating since these seeds are high in fiber and fat. You may want to begin with a lower amount and work your way up.

Human fish oil products are safe for dogs. They are a good source of omega 3 which I use to reduce joint inflammation from arthritis. As Chacha is so small the maximum dose for her is 500 mg Fish oil daily. I usually start with a lower dose to make sure she doesn't get diarrhea and then I gradually increase it. You can split the dose also if you feed twice daily. Some people use liquid, others cut open the capsules and put the oil directly on the food. I would not recommend this strength for a chihuhua and recommend either a smaller strength capsule such as viacutan or a liquid supplement which you can measure more accurately. Excess of any supplementation is undesirable and he would be effectively receiving 3-4 times the recommended amount

It's fine to give dogs the human grade fish oil. Chloe can have 1,000 mg fish oil containing 300 mg of EPA/DHA combined for every 30 pounds of body weight. These pills are a little more than that, but it will be fine. She won't need vitamin E supplementation also. I hope this helps!

Yes omega 3 fatty acids are great for them! I would recommend a brand made for dogs. I have attached a link below. You can also give 1/2 tablet of benadryl twice a day to help with itching. You may also think about switching her to natural balance limited ingredient diet venison and sweet potato food in case it is a food allergy. This food has no grains and no chicken/beef which are the most common allergens for dogs. I hope this helps.
