My dog chewed a hole in her skin. Is it an abscess or infection?

This looks like a local abscess from a bite wound or an insect bite or if there is a mass there it could have been a cyst that got infected. If he is licking it, I recommend to place a cone collar to prevent him from doing that. Also I would clean it with a mild anti-bacterial soap and water. You can try putting some neosporin on it but if it isn't improving, you will likely need to see your vet for an exam and some oral antibiotics to get rid of the infection. I hope this helps.

If there is really an abscess, this should not be treated at home. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. This may be due to a bacterial infection, mite infection, or due to an underlying allergy. I would recommend she see her veterinarian as soon as possible. Your veterinarian may do skin scraping to check for mites and may prescribe a course of antibiotics or other medications as necessary. Your veterinarian may also send you home with topical antimicrobial wipes and shampoo as well. I hope this helps and thanks again for posting!

It sounds like this wound that became a lump that is oozing fluid has become an abscess, or a pocket of infected fluid. Abscesses form when infection is trapped under the skin or within tissues such as fat or muscle. The bacteria will try to find a way out, so they can break through the skin and create a "draining tract" of pus. This should be addressed by your veterinarian, who will likely drain the abscess and open it up to allow continuous drainage. Antibiotics for at least 2 weeks will be needed, along with pain medications. Depending on the size of the wound/abscess, a bandage may be needed. I hope this is helpful! Ouch! Looks like that may be an abscess (infection) or a wound/cyst/growth that is now bleeding or sore. It would be best to bring Buddy to the vet so the area can be looked at, cleaned, drained, and treated, and medication given to help with pain and infection.
