Dog with cast yelps suddenly: Is she hurting or just adjusting?

Clearly Tink is in pain if she holds her leg up in the air and she cries when you touch her paw. She is a little dog and if she feel from a high bed, I'm concerned she could have broken her leg. The only way to rule out a broken leg is with an x-ray from the vet. In addition, she needs pain medication which you cannot give her OTC. Many human pain medications are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. The best thing to do for her is take her into a vet immediately to get this examined and treated. Please do that now. The fact she cries out when you touch her there and when trying to get up indicates back end pain. Some dogs with anal gland issues or Lyme disease can show similar symptoms. I would have her seen today by your Vet before the weekend. They will very likely on physical exam be able to tell where she hurts. It could be her back or hips were painful when she got up, and that's why she squealed, but the pain stopped when she started moving around. I would keep an eye on her for now, and if she continues squealing when she gets up, I would have her checked out by a vet. Please do not give her any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. Best of luck.

Poor Baby! It definitely sounds like she's painful somewhere. In my experience, the most common cause of yelping or yipping when touched or petted is back pain, often due to a herniated disc - this is a fairly common problem in dogs. She could also be painful due to some other injury to her legs or back. I would recommend having her examined by a vet as soon as you are able to - he/she can do a thorough exam to help localize the source of the pain, and may also do x-rays if needed to help diagnose the problem.

The yelping is likely a sign of pain, which can localized to pretty much any of the joints, including the spine. Princess may have trauma or arthritis which are both painful. Your vet can perform and exam and x-rays to determine exactly which part of the body is affected. Supplements, pain medication (if Princess can tolerate them), and a diet may be warranted to keep Princess pain-free. I hope this helps and that all is well!

Without examining her, it is difficult to know whether she potentially has a fracture or a soft tissue injury. If she seems very painful on the hind leg, I recommend having her evaluated by a veterinarian. He/she can perform a physical exam to best localize the pain. Your veterinarian may also recommend x-rays to look for evidence of a fracture, which may require surgical fixation. If no fracture is found, Hazel may have sustained a soft tissue injury, and will require strict rest and anti-inflammatories. In the mean time, please restrict her activity to cage-rest only and leash walks only to prevent worsening of any injuries. I hope this is helpful!

It sounds like Trixie is in pain. Her fall may have caused her to fracture a bone, damage a joint or ligament, or caused some muscle damage. While joint/muscle damage may resolve on its own, a fracture may require stabilization. Without it, the bone may heal in a deformed way and even alter the growth of the leg in the future. A vet will be able to perform x-rays to see if there is a fracture and offer you treatment options - likely a splint, cast, or surgery to chose from. X-rays are usually not very expensive and will give an answer regarding the cause of the limping. They will also be able to prescribe the appropriate pain medication that is safe for dog. In the meantime, I recommend keeping Trixie as quiet and calm as possible to prevent further trauma.
