My dog's bump has a hole with gunk, and I put peroxide. What is it?

This may be an abscesses, cysts or tumors. You should have them examined by your veterinarian. An abscess can usually be treated with antibiotics and/or be lanced, and a cyst can be evacuated. To identify a tumor, your vet may want to do a fine needle aspirate (he takes some material from the bump with a needle and then looks at it under the microscope) to determine whether the mass is concerning.

This looks like a typica skin wart/skin tumor or cyst. Since it has been present for so long and has not grown at all, it is probably benign (non cancerous). It looks as if the area has been irritated somehow, probably by your dog scratching at it, and is now bleeding and may be infected. Or, if it is a cyst, the white material may just be cystic exudate. I would recommend cleaning the area with some dilute hydrogen peroxide then applying some antibiotic ointment to help prevent infection and to help it heal more quickly. It looks very inflamed. It could be a pressure sore or a reaction to bite. It is at a difficult spot due being a pressure for dogs when they lie down. Try to keep him some padded bedding to help the best you can. I would stop peroxide as it can delay healing at this point. You can try cortisone cream to help with the redness but he might need antibiotics or a different anti inflammatory to clear it up

Things like this can be an enlarged pore that has accumulated a wax ball or sometimes a cyst that has dried up and the body has blocked off. Generally these pets will be fine. Wash the area gently with soap and rinse it well. Gently pat it dry. Make sure Stella does not lick at it as this can make it inflamed and prone to infection. Look at it daily for any signs of redness, swelling or discharge. If these are seen, take her to the veterinarian. Generally these lesions will fill in and don’t require you to apply any treatment. What you are describing sounds like a sebaceous cyst. These are commonly found in the skin in dogs. A lot of times they will express a thick white or yellowish material. This is normal. The cysts do not usually need to be removed unless they become infected or are irritating the dog. If your dog has one cyst they may develop more down the road but it should be nothing to worry about.

Hi you can clean the area gently with some cotton water and some saline or lukewarm boiled water. I think the lump could be a benign skin tumour that has now released ome keratin and cause inflammation. However, you should get a more precise diagnosis where the fine needle aspirate results are back. Make an appointment with your vet tomorrow, unless worried in the meantime. Hope this helps !

If it is just the one spot, you can clean it with a diluted Betadine or chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) solution daily. A warm compress applied for 5-10 minutes a few times daily may bring it to a head quicker. If it spreads or worsens, Bella may need to be seen by your veterinarian for an exam and systemic antibiotics. Use an e-collar (cone), if necessary, to prevent licking.
