My dog has bugs. How to prevent house infestation and keep my dog?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Ticks live in the grass and jump on animals/cloths, and then bite and stay attached. Fleas will live in bedding/baseboards and will jump on and bite animals and then jump off. If you get a product such as Frontline, Bravecto, Nexguard, Advantix, Advantage, Revolution, etc. that should deal with fleas. Some will deal with ticks, but some won't. I would check to see if you aren't actually dealing with bed-bugs. YEs, this sounds like fleas. You need to treat all the dogs and cats in the household with flea prevention. And you need to treat the house and the outside yard. 1. I would first give all the pets PetArmor Fast Caps. This will kill all the adult fleas on the pets within one hour. However, it only works for 24 hours so after this you will need to apply a topical long-term flea prevention. I would recommend using the Pet Armor topical prevention. DO NOT use cheaper products like Hartz. They don't work and are often toxic. You need to apply this topical product EVERY month. Wait 24 hours after applying the Pet Armour and then bathe with a medicated shampoo. If the dog was treated prior to coming to you house then the fleas are likely dying. It somewhat depends on what treatment the dog was given as to how much of a problem these fleas may be. I would make sure to keep your dog current on flea medication. Vacuum areas where your dad's dog has been and empty the canister outside as this may pick up an flea eggs or larvae that fell off of that dog. More than likely your house will be fine without drastic treatments. Be sure all pets have flea medication applied or given.

I would recommend first a good flea and tick prevention. You can use the oral medication or even the seresto collar. Even if she doesn't go outside she can still get fleas. For her skin I would bring her to a veterinarian. She will most likely need medication to stop licking and scratching and antibiotics to heal her infection. She may also be prescribed a shampoo that is medicated that you can't get over the counter. There are great medications now that help with itching also. They have to feed off blood to produce eggs, so I wouldn't worry about that or an infestation. It sounds as though you have done a good job. I would just add that you should consider a long lasting tick preventative. Dips and sprays do not last long on the dog. I would consider one of the new oral medications: either Nexgard or Simparica which are monthly or Bravecto which is one pill every 3 months. i wish you and Lilly the best!

The fleas and ticks will bite you as well. If Koko has fleas and ticks, you need to treat him with a medication such as Nexgard or Frontline. You will also have to disinfect the environment. Wash his bedding in hot soapy water, and vacuum the furniture and carpet surfaces. You can use a spray to kill fleas in the house, such as Indorex, or a flea bomb would work well to kill the fleas in the home. Best of luck, I hope this helps!
