Why is my dog breathing fast, shaking, with urine breath post-dental?

Dental abscesses, broken teeth and ulcers can all cause pain, as can foreign bodies stuck in the mouth. A full dental exam under sedation may be required and blood tests for kidney disease may be recommended also

Tita most likely either has severe periodontal disease or uremic breathe due to an underlying kidney problem (less likely). Have her evealuated by your vet and highly consider getting her teeth cleaned. If she does have a foul odor then periodontal disease is very possible and she may even require some teeth extractions to get her back on track to having a healthy mouth. Oral hygiene affects the health of so many other organs, so it's important to get this treated quickly. Once she does get her teeth cleaned and obtains a healthy oral cavity, brushing her teeth daily can help her maintain this level of care and prevent severe dental disease in the future. I agree that this is a pretty rapid respiratory rate for Daisy, particularly if she's resting while breathing this quickly. As you mentioned, it's very possible that this fast breathing is due to post-operative pain. However, if she's currently receiving pain medication after surgery, it's a bit less likely. Other causes of rapid breathing can include stress or anxiety, blood clots in the lungs, heart disease, pneumonia, among others. Regardless, it would be best to take Daisy to the vet urgently for evaluation. If the vet suspects pain as the cause, they will be able to prescribe additional pain medications. Otherwise, they will be able to perform any necessary diagnostic testing, which may include chest x-rays or blood clotting times to try to get to the bottom of this issue. Poor Treasure! It could be that she is in pain or she could be very sick. It's quite concerning that such a young puppy is breathing fast, not moving, not eating, drinking, or peeing. These symptoms in such a young dog are a medical emergency, and she has to see a vet immediately. She needs veterinary care now to diagnose what is causing these symptoms so she can be treated. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. Poor Winnie! Try not to panic at this point, sometimes dogs can have odd reactions to medication. It really depends what sort of pain killer, if it is some sort of opioid such as buprenorphine/methadone etc then shaking is very commonly seen as it enters the nervous system. However with other painkillers such as metacam etc then it wouldn't be so common. Secondly, a dog can always have an allergic reaction to any medication so if this is a medication she has never had before I would consider calling your vet for advice if her condition does not improve. Finally, there is always a possibility that something else is going on. I would double check that you gave the correct dose of medicine, and if not and you overdosed ring your vet immediately for advice or to be seen. If she continues to deteriorate I would take her into the vet in case she is having a medication reaction or it could be that her original condition is getting worse or developing. But most importantly try not to panic for now, monitor her in a calm and comfy environment. Shaking can be incredibly common with many pain killers and they can also cause drooling and odd behaviour. If she becomes sick or starts to loose consciousness please go to the vet. Hello. Your blood work should have indicated if there were any kidney problems, so if nothing was said, I would rule this out. If she did well on antibiotics, but then regressed, she may need to stay on antibiotics longer. Some dogs remain on antibiotics for 6-8 weeks. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Matilda! I am not familiar with using a tube in the nose to deliver oxygen and anesthetic gas for dentals or surgery. We use endotracheal tubes down their throats for this. It sounds like Matilda has irritation from the tube most likely or she has an infection. Just make sure she is breathing normally to be sure her heart and lungs are ok. If she has a history of a heart murmur a recheck with your Vet may be the best thing. Irritation from the tracheal tube should resolve on it's own in a week, getting better each day. If she has kennel cough she may need an antibiotic or something to help with the cough. I recommend calling your Vet today to discuss her symptoms and see if they can prescribe something to give her some relief that you can pick it up. They may want to see her first though.
