Looking for dog books for 12-year-olds on training, care, and health?

You can search online for an updated edition of the book in question. Sites such as Amazon ( www.amazon.com ) or the AKC Shop ( https://shop.akc.org ) may have it or a similar publication. "The New Complete Dog Book" ( https://shop.akc.org/products/the-new-complete-dog-book ) may be something you would be interested in.

Congratulations on your first dog! I recommend to first have harry examined by the veterinarian and have any vaccines, antiparasitics...etc updated. Bring in his vaccine records if you have them. Then I recommend to start reading about dog behavior and training. Your local library is a wonderful resource for books. Read books about golden doodles, golden retrievers and poodles but keep in mind that all dogs are individuals. Also read about dog training. One trainer I like in particular is Victoria Stilwel. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Here are some book recommendations: Miller's Anatomy of the Dog Guide to the Dissection of the Dog Here is a free online anatomy site: http://www.cvmbs.colostate.edu/vetneuro/ You may also call your school for their book list. Good luck!

Your best bet would be to enroll him in a good dog obedience class as soon as possible. I do not recommend books or videos, as there is no instructor present to give helpful advice and corrections. The kind of "perfect" obedience you describe is earned through hours and hours of practice (though no more than 10 minutes at a time for a dog that young!) You can go very far in obedience, even teaching jumping, retrieving, etc. The more you work with your dog, the more attentive to you he will be.

It is never too soon to start some basic training and at 9 weeks she should be more than ready even if she is small. I would keep training sessions short but frequent. If she loses interest, stop and try again in a few hours. I really like Sophia Yin's book The Perfect Puppy in 7 Days - she recommends integrating training into your daily routine. https://www.amazon.com/Perfect-Puppy-Days-Start-Right/dp/0964151871/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1524569051&sr=8-1&keywords=the+perfect+puppy+in+7+days

Great question and it's so great that you want to be informed so that Noushmc can live a long, happy life! The Complete Illustrated Guide to Cat Care by Bruce Fogle is a book that would be helpful to you. Also, "Cats for Dummies" by Gina Spadafori and Paul Pion is also a good reference. Great questions! The most important tip I have is to have a dog fund, money set aside for your puppy's heath care. I would budget to spend at least $500-$1000 a year, but I would save more than that for emergencies. Dogs need regular health care just like humans, and you need to make sure you have the funds available to provide that care. The puppy you get should be at least six to eight weeks of age, any younger is too young to be separated from their mother. Keep in mind your puppy will need vaccines, deworming treatments, flea treatment, heartworm treatment, and should be either neutered (boy) or spayed (girl) when they are old enough. You will also need a leash, food bowl, water bowl, dog bed, and puppy toys. I would have your puppy see a vet as soon as you get it for a health check and to discuss the vaccine schedule. I hope this helps :-)
