My dog's poop is bloody. Could chewing wood cause blood in his poop?

Hi there. Poor Ruby! It definitely sounds like she's teething-puppies go through this stage of putting everything in their mouths the same as humans. Since Ruby is not 4 months or more yet, she is still not considered fully vaccinated. If her vaccines were home vaccines and are from a store over the counter-sometimes they are improperly stored and provide poor immunity. Any time there is blood in the stool it warrants a trip to your veterinarian right away, as your puppy can be very sick when showing this symptom. They will probably also perform a fecal test to rule out any parasites. My best to you and Ruby and I hope his helps!

I'd keep an eye on Harley. It's good he's pooping out the pieces, but if you see more blood, he stops eating, and/or he becomes very lethargic, I would be concerned and have him seen by a vet. I hope this helps!

Blood in the feces can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. I'm sorry that Azazel isn't feeling well! Bloody stools in a young dog can be caused by IBD (inflammatory bowel disease), Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, or much less commonly a growth or trauma. Eating a large amount of his normal food would not, by itself, cause bloody stools. If his stool looks like raspberry jam, I would recommend taking him to the vet or an emergency clinic right away. If there are just streaks of blood on the outside of his bowel movements, and he's actually totally normal (eating, drinking, good energy, has pink gums) it's not an emergency just yet. In that case, I would recommend feeding him a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice and giving him a day to see if it resolves. If after a second day (so 48 hours total) he's still have blood stool or is having diarrhea, it would be wise to have him checked out at your regular vet. Bring a fresh stool sample to any vet you end up seeing so they can check him for intestinal parasites. Wishing you and Azazel the best of luck! Hello there! I'm sorry to hear that Red is sick. I'm very worried about him as dark, tarry vomit and stools are very suspicious of gastrointestinal bleeding. I am even more concerned as you mentioned he ate some wood chips - while it's possible that the chips have just irritated his intestinal lining, it is also possible that he has an intestinal perforation (a hole in the intestines), which can be deadly. I'm glad to hear that his abdomen feels normal and he has pink gums, but it's still possible that he has bleeding going on, and he should get treatment for this as soon as possible. I strongly suggest bringing Red to an emergency veterinary hospital for treatment. At the very least, he probably needs some rehydrating fluids as he's likely dehydrated from all the vomiting. At the vet's office, he'll get a physical exam, and they will probably want to do some abdominal x-rays to look for any major bleeding. If there is no perforation, they can prescribe him some medication that can protect the GI tract and get him feeling better while the wood chips pass through. There is also the possibility that he has an obstruction, and he may require surgery. I do not recommend giving him anything at home, as depending on the cause of his symptoms, it could very well make him worse. The only way to figure out the best course of treatment is to have a vet look at him, and I recommend that he sees one ASAP. Good luck, and I really hope that Red gets well soon! Hemorrhagic gastroenteritis and parvovirus both cause bloody diarrhea, but I'm concerned about the bone you gave Molly to chew on. Bones can cause perforation of the GI tract as well as damage to the tract, and that could also be the cause of her bloody diarrhea. If the dogs also had bones as well, that could cause their diarrhea too. Bloody diarrhea can be very serious, so I'd have her checked out by a vet as soon as possible. The spots of blood could possibly be related to eating parts of the comb, or could be caused by intestinal parasites or a bacterial or viral infection. I think it would be best to have him checked out by a vet tomorrow, or sooner if he develops vomiting or lethargy.
