My Dachshund has bloody liquid stool. When should I call the vet?

I recommend to call your veterinarian today. They should ask many detailed questions and help you decide if Jennex should come in for an exam today or if you can try a bland diet +/- probiotics and see if it passes after 24 hours. In normal times, Jennex would go to the vet but with COVID-19, some protocols are changing. Blood in the stool significant significant inflammation or sometimes a more severe cause of GI upset. The blood could be due to many conditions including eating something he shouldn’t have, bacterial over growth, parasites or even organ disease. If the vet wants to see Jennex, the doctor will check him for parasites and bacterial over growth so bring in a stool sample. A bland diet can help. A bland diet can consist of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% boiled white rice. This should all be plain. A good probiotic is Purina FortiFlora if you can find it. When there is blood in the stool I do become a little more concerned. I would recommend a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice, however I would still recommend an examination with a veterinarian tomorrow. That being said if he had a very bloody stool tonight, one that looks like raspberry jam, then he should be seen immediately. If he is developing a problem called HGE they can get very sick very quickly. If he starts vomiting that also increases my concern. I hope he improves quick.

Hello, sorry to hear about Pookie. It sounds like he is having some hemorrhagic gastroenteritis (HGE). Occasionally this is self limiting and can be resolved with a bland diet for 3-5 days (plain white rice, skinless and boneless boiled chicken). However often, pets require medications and supportive care for the associated dehydration, vomiting, and diarrhea (with or without blood) that comes with this disease. If Pookie is not improving within a day, or if his diarrhea is worsening despite the bland diet, if he develops innapetence or vomiting, then he should be evaluated by his veterinarian promptly. One of the sharp bone ends may have caused irritation or internal injury. Bright, red blood may indicate injury in the colon or lower intestine while dark, tarry stool may indicate bleeding in the stomach or upper intestine. If she is not passing the bones she needs to be seen right away. Help 'pad' the bones passing through by offering bulky meals for a few days and even consider adding some unflavored Metamucil to wet food for her. Poor Gambino! If he continues behaving normally then I would pick up his regular food and only feed him a very bland diet until your appointment - boiled skinless boneless chicken and white rice. Also I would bring a sample of his stool in for testing. If your vet is open this evening you may want to move your appointment so they can get him some medication to help with the diarrhea asap. If that is not possible and he has multiple jam-like bowel movements I would bring him in to an emergency clinic this evening. They can get dehydrated quickly with that much diarrhea. Poor Dakota. It sounds like he feels really bad. Bones can splinter in the GI tract and cause quite a bit of damage and pain, so I would recommend having your veterinarian examine him to make sure that he doesn't have any more bone fragments in his GI tract that are causing a problem. You vet can also prescribe an antibiotic that will help resolve the diarrhea and prevent any problems that the bone may have caused in the GI tract to help him feel better ASAP. Good luck! Blood in the feces can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. If this continues, I recommend that you have Sami evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment.
