Dog had bloody diarrhea, now won't eat and struggles to walk. Why?

Hi! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Thanks for the pictures! Gino's testicles look normal to me. I don't see any evidence of skin disease. I don't think he is shaking because of his testicles or penis. I am worried about him with the constant shaking and now not eating and bloody diarrhea. Causes of bloody diarrhea are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, toxin ingestion, metabolic conditions like liver/kidney disease or Addison's disease, pancreatitis, dietary indiscretion, food allergy/intolerance. You can start a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until 2 days of normal stool. Gino sounds like he is significantly painful: he could have joint disease, Lyme disease, panosteitis or other growing disease. He REALLY needs to see a Vet at least for an exam. You can ask for a financial estimate before agreeing to tests and medications. With out examining him myself I can't tell you exactly what is wrong. I hope this helps and I wish Gino the best~!

Poor guy. It sounds like you should go to another vet for a second opinion here. Something is definitely causing your pets inappetence and GI symptoms. Some things to consider as causes would be addison's disease and pancreatitis. I would recommend going back to the vet to have bloodwork analysis and a urinalysis to start. They may also want to do radiographs as well. In the meantime it is best to offer small portion meals of boiled plain chicken or lean ground turkey and white rice with some pedialyte (non-flavored) diluted 50:50 with water to help replace some of the electrolyte losses. Poor Dakota. It sounds like he feels really bad. Bones can splinter in the GI tract and cause quite a bit of damage and pain, so I would recommend having your veterinarian examine him to make sure that he doesn't have any more bone fragments in his GI tract that are causing a problem. You vet can also prescribe an antibiotic that will help resolve the diarrhea and prevent any problems that the bone may have caused in the GI tract to help him feel better ASAP. Good luck! This sounds like he’s in pain. It can be from arthritis, a knee ligament injury or pain from his back. Arthritis should show up on x rays, and he would be lame on one leg if it’s a cruciate ligament injury. Back pain can be caused by a bulging intervertebral disc and can me difficult to see on x rays. It can cause trouble walking with incoordination. Regardless I would try Tom on pain medication to see if that helps and keep him quiet. No running or jumping and lots of short slow leash walks. Once the pain is controlled he should eat better. If there is no improvement I recommend a rcheck or an exam with a veterinary specialist. If he is acting normal then you can withhold food for 12 hours and then offer him a small amount of a bland diet, like boiled chicken and white rice, and see how he does with that. You could also add a probiotic to his food. If the diarrhea continues, he starts vomiting, and/or becomes lethargic then he needs to be examined by a vet for treatment. He could have an infection, parasite, colitis, HGE, etc. and your vet can run lab-work to help diagnose and treat. Hope he feels better soon!

I am very sorry to hear that Honor is experiencing this issue, I am sure it is unsettling. From what you are describing, diarrhea which becomes liquid and has fresh blood in it, it sounds as though Honor has colitis, or inflammation of the last portion of the large intestines. There are several causes of colitis in dogs, ranging from bacterial infections, parasite infestations, IBD, or ingestion of contaminated food. Since you have only noticed these episodes over a few hours I would continue to monitor Honor at home. Start by resting his gastrointestinal tract for a few hours. Then Provide a bland diet of boiled boneless chicken breast and white rice and plenty of fresh water. If the episodes continue into the evening, if Honor becomes depressed, passes large amounts of blood, vomits, or seems very uncomfortable take Honor to see his vet. Poor Skittles! It sounds like she's quite sick. Bloody diarrhea and not eating are always symptoms that warrant a vet visit, so I would recommend taking her in for an exam as soon as possible. She may have a systemic illness like liver or kidney disease, a serious GI issue like pancreatitis or HGE (hemorrhagic gastroenteritis), or may have ingested something toxic. Your veterinarian can do blood work or other testing if needed to help diagnose the problem and get her started on appropriate treatment.
