This can be painful and messy so I recommend using a hot compress on the area several times a day to keep it clean and draining. Then I apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on the surface. As Milo will lick the area using a cone or restraint collar to prevent licking will help it heal faster. Once the sac has ruptured it usually will heal quickly on its own. Continue the antibiotics until they are finished. To prevent this from happening again I would have Milo's anal sacs expressed regularly, every two to three months. This looks like a ruptured anal gland, the medication she is currently on should help to prevent infection but you should have the other gland checked and emptied by your vet or vet tech to prevent the second from rupturing also. As long as the area is kept clean it should heal uneventfully, a high fiber supplement may help in preventing further recurrence

The good news is that even if the gland is ruptured, the veterinarian will be able to correctly diagnosed the condition and put your pet on the correct regimen of medications to get the gland back to functioning properly again. Hi. I'm sorry Moon had an anal gland abscess. Unfortunately these can come up fairly quickly and can't always be prevented. Now that you know Moon may be predisposed to anal gland problems you can discuss some prevention tips with your primary veterinarian. Some dogs benefit by having thier anal glands expressed regularly - your veterinary hospital can do this or teach you if you're interested. Sometimes diet changes can help, but discuss with your vet. Unfortunately a month earlier hersnal glands may have been completely normal and your vet would have no way of predicting this. I do recommend bringing him to a vet for a recheck and expression of the anal glands and a reflushing if the anal glands with dilute chlorhexidine solution if they appear to still be oozy. It is unusual, if the anal gland were expressed the first time, for there to be a second fistula within 2 weeks. I also recommend placing an e-collar for a week while Barney is on antibiotics and pain meds as well as a topical prescription steroid/antibiotic/antifungal ointment such as dermavet/quadritops etc. that often speeds up healing of the fistula. With topical as well as oral antibiotics on emptied/flushed anal glands, fistula usually heal within a week. Good luck!

Yes, that is considered expressing the anal sacs. I would only do them as needed. If you notice that Lolli is sniffing around her anus or scooting her bottom, then they may need to be expressed again. Best of luck.
