Dog has black specks on skin. Is it yeast? Can I treat at home?

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Female | spayed | 1 year and 8 months old | 30.25 lbs

My dog has little black specks on her stomach, things, and genitals. It does not wash off and is not flea dirt. She was seen yesterday at my vet but I didn't notice this until today. Her vet diagnosed her with a yeast and bacteria infection in her ears possibly due to allergies so I was wondering if this was possibly a skin yeast infection? If so is this something I can treat from home without another vet visit?

Black specs could be a parasitic infection such as lice or mites or it could be due to a bacterial or yeast infection. It could also be normal pigmentation variations. You can try to bathe Luna in an antibacterial soap being careful to avoid her ears. But if this does not clear up in the next few days she will likely need to be seen by the vet again to obtain a diagnosis and get appropriate therapy prescribed.

This could be part of a skin infection, possibly also due to yeast and/or bacteria. However, given that your veterinarian already looked at her, its appearance must have been inconsistent with dermatitis (perhaps did not look inflamed or irritated). It is ok to continue to watch for now unless Luna appears to be itchy, scratching at those locations and overall uncomfortable as that may represent part of a skin allergy, inflammation and secondary infection.

It is quite possible. The most common cause of a dermal yeast infection in dogs is secondary to the chronic inflammation caused by allergies (food, fleas, environmental). The small dark specks are often clogged skin pores. The larger patches of dark skin are pigment changes caused by chronic inflammation. Short-term, you can look for an antifungal pet shampoo at the store. Once that also states anti-inflammatory may give Penny some relief. But she really needs to be thoroughly evaluated by the vet to get to the root of the problem to help the skin.

My dog has black flecks on her neck, not scratching, no fleas. Why?

It looks like Izzy has something called comodones - basically tiny black heads or pimples. A shampoo with benzoyl peroxide will help flush out the hair follicles and can remove these black specs. If Izzy is otherwise totally normal (eating well, good energy, not hair loss or weight changes), you can buy an over the counter shampoo with benzoyl peroxide and bathe her twice a week for 2 weeks. During her bathes lather her up and then let her sit for 10 minutes (or as close as you can get, not all dogs tolerate this!) and then rinse. If Izzy starts getting itchy or having any other problems, I would recommend a trip to the veterinarian clinic for further evaluation. Good luck! Hello. These are comedones, essentially black heads, & they are commonly associated with dogs that have allergies. You can try bathing CJ in a benzoyl peroxide product ( shampoo or gel ) for its follicle flushing properties. Bathe weekly & make sure you leave the shampoo on for at least 10 minutes before rinsing. Why does my dog have black skin spots? Allergies, fleas, or infection?

She could have a skin infection, mites, fleas, ringworm, allergic dermatitis, etc. Your vet can do a skin scrape, cytology, or culture to help diagnose and then prescribe medications to treat the problem. She may need an antibiotic, anti-histamine, corticosteroid, or other medications depending on the cause. Make sure to treat her with a monthly flea medication like NexGard, Frontline, Advantage, or Revolution to prevent fleas.

There can be many causes of increased pigmentation in dogs, mostly relating to chronic inflammation. This can be caused by fleas, mange, lice, infections (bacterial or yeast), ringworm, allergies, among others. If the spots seem to be increasing, I recommend that Sophie be evaluated by a veterinarian. Also, make sure she is on a good flea preventative (topicals should not be applied for 3 days before or after bathing to ensure good absorption). While you wait for your vet appointment, you can try a medicated shampoo like Dechra MalAcetic Ultra Shampoo - lather on the skin, let it sit for 5 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.

Could yeast cause my Dachshund's black splotches and constant itching?

That does not look like a typical yeast infection, but your vet can do some simple skin tests to tell you for sure. Unfortunately, sometimes dogs have allergies that result in itching without any secondary infection and the only thing that helps are medication for the itching. There are some over the counter medications like Benadryl (https://www.petcoach.co/canigive/dog/benadryl/) that you can try, but the prescription medications work much better. I would recommend having your vet examine Chelsea, decide if she has a secondary yeast infection that needs treatment (which could be topical or oral medication), then decide on a treatment plan for her itching.
