Help! My rescue dog has black diarrhea with red mucus. OTC options?

I would take Allie into the vet immediately This black diarrhea means there is bleeding in the upper intestinal tract, and this can be caused by eating something toxic, trauma to the GI tract, a foreign body, GI ulcers, or GI tumors among other causes. Bloody diarrhea can be very serious, especially if the dog has no energy, and this is not something that should be attempted to be treated at home. Allie needs veterinary care to determine what is causing this bleeding so she can be treated correctly. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. I would recommend having Golia get checked out by a vet. I always recommend a quick checkup for any diarrhea that lasts longer than 24 hours. Sometimes it is just a simple upset stomach that will respond to a round of prescription medications. It could also be caused by intestinal parasites. Or it could be an indicator of other illness, such as bacterial or viral infections or IBD. Some dogs will respond to adding 1/2 a tablespoon of canned pumpkin (for fiber) in their food twice a day, but if Golia isn't better tomorrow, it is best to be evaluated by a vet. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! To treat diarrhea I recommend fast Otis for 12-24 hours. Do not limit water unless vomiting. Then restart feeding as a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per day until 2 days of normal stools. If the diarrhea doesn't improve he should be seen by your Vet. As for the bleeding butt-I would need more information. If you mean there is blood in the stool then the above may help. But if there is blood in the stool Otis ideally needs antibiotics which you can get from your Vet. If there is a wound on his butt or near his butt then he needs to see a Vet. I hope this helps

With these pups, there is always a potential for parasites or bacterial overgrowth to cause the symptoms. I would recommend to get Parks in for an exam and to have the stool checked for parasites. That is usually a good sign if you don’t see any more blood, which is what I’m concerned you were seeing in the stool. It’s better to be safe and also to make sure he doesn’t have any parasites to spread to his new human family. There are other causes for blood in the stool as well and these can vary from a new diet to internal organ damage. The first step is to rule out the most common things. Melena is digested blood from a high gastro-intestinal bleed. Usually from the stomach. Stomach ulcers, ulcer perforation, low platelets (thrombocytopenia), certain medications like NSAIDs and steroids can cause stomach irritation, uremia from kidney failure and cancer can cause this. I recommend you take her to the Vet this morning to have her looked at and blood work done to check her platelets. I recommend holding on food for now. I wish you the best of luck!

As long as he is otherwise well I would restrict jim to a bland diet such as boiled chicken and brown rice and add some pumpkin to restore normal bowel movement. Probiotics are also very helpful (natural yogurt if you can't source fortifora). Any lethargy, vomiting or reduced appetite would indicate the need for a vet check.
