Why is my dog's diarrhea black after eating dairy? Is erection normal?

Hi, thanks for using Petcoach! I don't think you need to be super concerned with Diesel. I recommend starting him on a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger mixed with rice. Feed him 3 1/2 cups per day until 2 normal stools. You can also start a probiotic. I like Purina Fortiflora. If the diarrhea persists, worsens, you see blood or he starts vomiting get him looked at by your Vet. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Murphy! Murphy is having diarrhea. It is common to have urgency and straining with diarrhea. It can make them uncomfortable and that is why they whine. Causes of diarrhea are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, he ate something gross that is upsetting his belly, new food/treat/table food, food allergy/intolerance, toxin ingestion. Since Murphy is only 13 weeks old, I would take him to your Vet when they open. Bring a stool sample with you so they can test it for parasites. They may want to test him for Parvo virus if he is not vaccinated. Most likely he will be sent home with medications and a bland diet. I hope this helps and I wish Murphy a speedy recovery!

Poor Tobey! Black diarrhea indicates bleeding in the upper GI tract. This could be due to ulcers, tumors of the GI tract, a GI infection, kidney failure, Addison's disease, eating something rotten, or liver disease to name some causes. I would have him seen by a vet for this problem, but as long as he's acting normal, you don't not need to rush him into the ER vet. If he continues pooping black diarrhea, he starts vomiting, he becomes very lethargic, or he stops eating, I would take him into an ER vet. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Yes, it looks like Snowy is having some diarrhea. Diarrhea can be caused by a number of things, ranging from dietary indiscretion (he ate something he shouldn't have), diet change, gastrointestinal parasites (worms), or other organ system diseases like liver disease, kidney disease, pancreatitis, etc. I recommend feeding Snowy a bland diet such as boiled (unseasoned) chicken or hamburger and rice, in a ratio of 2 parts rice to 1 part meat, for the next 3-4 days, to help firm up his stools. You can also try adding in a small amount of Metamucil (original, unflavored) powder to this food. Metamucil is an over-the-counter fiber supplement for people that we often use to help dogs with diarrhea. He would likely benefit from about 1/4 teaspoon of Metamucil in his food twice a day. If you are not noticing an improvement in his diarrhea after 2-3 days, I recommend bringing him (and a sample of his stool) to your veterinarian. At that time, a fecal analysis can be performed, and any other diagnostics as needed. I hope this is helpful! Best of luck with Snowy!

Black stool can indicate bleeding in the upper gastrointestinal tract. Considering this, I would be worried about a serious infection. If Tuxedo has any of the following, then it's best to take him to a vet right away: 1) Starts acting very depressed 2) Stops eating or drinking for longer than 24 hours. 3) Pale or yellow gums Otherwise, he can wait to go to the vet sometime in the next 24 hours. You can help him get through this by feeding bland food (boneless chicken and rice is good). Feed small portions (1/2 cup or less) three times a day. You can also add probiotics to the food (can get this at the pet store), which has demonstrated some efficacy for improving diarrhea. Dehydration is the biggest concern with profuse diarrhea. Ensure fresh, clean water is always available. Oral rehydration salts or pedialyte can be added to the water to help keep him hydrated. I hope this helps and Tuxedo gets better soon.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Diarrhea resolving can take a few days, so it is normal that it isn't as solid as normal. The straining however isn't normal. I would recommend checking to make sure around her anus looks ok (no bleeding or wounds), and if you can feel under her anus at the 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock positions, does it feel like hard marbles are under the skin. If this is the case she could have full anal glands which can be making her uncomfortable in her back end. This would require a vet visit to empty them before they burst. Otherwise, as long as she is eating/playing, I would just monitor her to see if the behaviour continues. If she is still straining tomorrow I would take Riley to the vet to make sure she isn't constipated, but it might just be a one-off episode. If her next poop is normal without straining then I wouldn't worry about it. Best of luck with Riley!

Diarrhea is a quite aspecific sign and there are many different causes. Dietary indiscretion, infections (bacterial, viral or parasitic), inflammatory conditions (i.e. IBD), and neoplastic diseases are some of the possible causes. The dark colour might be a sign of gastro-intestinal bleeding and might need vet attention asap. If Chewie is otherwise fine, I would start him on a bland diet (boiled chicken and rice) but if his diarrhea is still present in 12-24 hrs or if he starts vomiting or getting lethargic I would have Chewie checked by your veterinarian as soon as possible.
