My dog ate a Twinkie. Will he be okay? What symptoms to watch for?

Hello. I do not think this small amount of chocolate will harm Twix. It would take at least 4-6 ounces before clinical signs would be apparent in this large a dog. If this was only a tablespoon or so, he will be fine. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Oh my, that was naughty of him to eat all that! Luckily the Oreos won't contain a lot of chocolate, and if the donut wasn't chocolate either, there wouldn't be a concern about chocolate toxicity. The concern is the sugar content, which can and does cause GI upset. I can give you a home remedy to try if you see any GI upset in the form of vomiting. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. Sweet potatoes are not toxic to dogs, so I would not normally expect this to cause any problems apart from some GI upset if she isn't used to eating human food like this. So your pup will probably be just fine :)

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I’m not terribly concerned about this. There is not enough chocolate to really affect a dog this size. Possible concerns would be an obstruction from the wrappers if he ate those too OR pancreatitis flare up if there is alot of fat in those cakes. Otherwise, I’d monitor for vomiting and diarrhea. I see he's a good sized dog at 55lbs, so chances are eating this cookie is not going to cause him any problems. At most, you may see some GI upset, but I wouldn't be surprised if you don't see anything at all. It can take up to 24 hours for signs of chocolate toxicity to occur, so monitor him over this time period. Do not let him get ahold of any more cookies! I hope this helps!
