My dog got into sanitary pads. Will the blood make his stool black?

More than likely it is from the change in food but black, tarry stool can be a sign of gastrointestinal bleeding. You could take a sample to your vet, when you notice that it is black, and have it tested for blood. That way you will know if it is anything to worry about or just normal color change.

Black, tar-like stools are common with bleeding in the stomach, upper GI tract. Bleeding that occurs lower in the GI tract with have red blood in the stools. I have never needed a human test to check for blood in the GI tract. Gastroenteritis is a common cause for blood in vomit and/or stools. Some cases are mild and respond to medications and out-patient treatment, while others, such as HGE, require hospitalization, IV fluids, and IV medications. Some dogs will have very dark stools that are normal and do not contain blood.

I'm sorry that Azazel isn't feeling well! Bloody stools in a young dog can be caused by IBD (inflammatory bowel disease), Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, or much less commonly a growth or trauma. Eating a large amount of his normal food would not, by itself, cause bloody stools. If his stool looks like raspberry jam, I would recommend taking him to the vet or an emergency clinic right away. If there are just streaks of blood on the outside of his bowel movements, and he's actually totally normal (eating, drinking, good energy, has pink gums) it's not an emergency just yet. In that case, I would recommend feeding him a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice and giving him a day to see if it resolves. If after a second day (so 48 hours total) he's still have blood stool or is having diarrhea, it would be wise to have him checked out at your regular vet. Bring a fresh stool sample to any vet you end up seeing so they can check him for intestinal parasites. Wishing you and Azazel the best of luck! Black stool typically indicates the presence of digested blood, most commonly from parasites or ulceration of the stomach or intestines. If Selfie's diet contains a lot of bloody meat, this could explain the black stool. Otherwise, this is not a normal finding and should be addressed by a vet fairly urgently. Selfie may need deworming and antacid medications to protect her stomach. If she has an ulcer, these can progress and become quite severe if left untreated. I hope that all goes well!

Toilet paper should pass, but may cause some digestive upset or cause blockage of the bowels if enough was eaten. That said, blood from the stomach is usually dark red or black, and blood from the rectum/anus is a brighter red color. If Brie has eaten any new treats or foods, that can also affect stool color. If the red stool and vomit only occurred once after eating the toilet paper, I would continue to monitor Brie for any other signs of a blockage, These include continued vomiting and diarrhea, blood in either still, hunched or tender abdomen, bloated abdomen, not wanting to eat or drink, or attempting to vomit or defecate without success, as these are all signs of a medical emergency. You may also want to offer a bland diet for a few days to help with any minor digestive upset. Boiled chicken and rice is an easy option on the stomach. If you suspect a blockage, the symptoms continue, or Brie isn't improving, vet care ASAP is best.

Poor Ben! Black stool can indicate that he has blood in his stool due to intestinal bleeding or ulcerations caused by the Ibuprofen. He probably had normal bloodwork on Friday because Ibuprofen (NSAID) can cause delayed problems (kidney, liver, GI ulcerations and GI bleeding) for up to 72 hrs after ingestion. With that said I would highly recommend taking Ben in to your local ER clinic right away for medical treatment. The vet will likely give him IV fluid therapy (to help preserve kidney function), repeat his bloodwork, give medications to treat GI ulcers, and GI coating medication (Sucralfate). Oh that is so horrible Luna was on a meat farm! I'm so glad you saved her. Yes, I would take her into a vet now. I'm concerned that the toy could be causing damage to her GI tract leading to the blood in her feces. She should have be checked out asap. I hope this helps.
