My pugs ate a chicken salad sandwich. Will onions make them sick?

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Onion in toxic to dogs but the toxic dose is fairly high. Sadie would have to eat more than a half of a large onion (or a whole normal size onion) to get into any trouble. She may show mild signs of stomach upset, like a bout of vomit or loose stools but there should not be any more concerning symptoms.

If Bo only ate a handful, there likely won't be enough onions in them to cause any problems. Since he is acting normally, I'd just keep an eye on him for now, but my guess would be he likely will be ok. Best of luck.

It is unlikely that there was enough onion present to cause a problem, but eating that much pizza will likely cause some gastroenteritis (inflammation of the stomach and intestines) which could lead to vomiting and diarrhea. He could also develop pancreatitis. If he starts vomiting, having diarrhea, isn't wanting to eat, or seems lethargic, please take him to your vet for treatment. In the meantime, withhold for at least 12 hours, then offer small amounts of. a bland diet such as boiled chicken and white rice for the next couple of days. Onions will cause oxidative damage to the red blood cells which can result in anemia. If the onions are going to be an issue, it will be a few days before you would see this, and generally would present as decreased appetite and lethargy. If those symptoms are noted, get him in to your vet for bloodwork. Again, I doubt there was enough onion present to be a problem. as generally its a relatively large amount that has to be ingested to cause a clinical problem. thanks for asking Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!

A few pieces of onion ingested by a dog of Mochi's size will likely cause nothing worse than some minor stomach upset, if anything at all. She would need to eat 2 or 3 med/large onions in order to be at risk of serious toxicity. If she develops vomiting or diarrhea but continues to behave normally, you can fast her for 24 hours then feed a bland diet in small, frequent amounts until symptoms resolve. Transition slowly to her regular diet afterwards.

Hi there. The only ingredient you've listed here that can potentially be toxic to dogs is onion - and for a 40 pound dog, he would need to eat quite a bit to cause any serious problems. I wouldn't expect the amount that would be on a small sub sandwich as a topping to be enough to be a major issue. It's possible that you may see some mild GI upset (vomiting or diarrhea) over the next 24 hours, especially if Bear isn't used to eating human food like this. But I would not expect to see any serious problems.

This may result though in gastrointestinal upset. Watch your pup for symptoms consistent with gastrointestinal upset such as vomiting, inappetence and/or diarrhea.
