My dog has anaplasma & a swollen, hot rash on his behind. Is it new?

My dog Eddie has been ill. Took him to the vet 10 days ago because he kept chewing his behind and was acting ill. Found out he had an infection and tickborne anaplasma. He's been on two different types of medications. I think the missed the large, swollen rash on his behind next to his tail. It was oozing pus and extremely hot. I shaved all the hair off to find there was no open sores. Just swollen, red and hot. Ice calms him. Could this be something separate needing new meds?

Anaplasmosis is transmitted by ticks, however what you're describing to me sounds like a "hot spot" (acute moist dermatitis), likely secondary to flea infestation. Fleas and ticks are usually combatted with one product, such as Frontline. Revolution, or Advantix, so I'm going to assume that if Eddie had ticks he could have fleas as well.

I think it is possible your vet missed the spot you're referring to, however if he discussed tick prevention with you and started Eddie on a good tick preventive then that should take care of any fleas as well. However, hot spots typically need antibiotics and usually steroids, although I'd likely avoid that in Eddie's case, since they depress the immune system, which he certainly needs to fight the anaplasmosis. It's likely your vet put him on doxycycline for the anaplasmosis, but since it doesn't have great efficacy against skin infections I would definitely call your vet back and discuss this spot, and see if he wants to get Eddie on cephalexin or another antibiotic for the hot spot. Shaving and cleaning are appropriate treatments as well, and usually we want to fit them with an e-collar, to keep them from continuing to chew.

    Poor guy. Unfortunately it sounds like he has a swollen anal gland abscess. The anal glands can become full and infected in pets who have bouts of diarrhea, because the anal gland is expressed naturally only when there is a hard stool. You will need to take Eddie back to the vet unfortunately to have his sacs properly expressed. It is possible one of the antibiotics he is already on can help as well. But the anal gland still needs to be expressed and flushed to remove the plugged duct.

This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria and commonly called hot spot). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection can eventually be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking/scratching. Why does my male dog have a rash, swelling, and discharge near his penis?
This looks like a localised spot of skin infection which can be easily treated its antibiotic and antiinflammatory ointment on prescription from your veterinarian. The fact that he is licking his paw as well can be due to an allergy, which possibly can be considered in case infection is not resolved with treatment trial. I would recommend a check up at your local vet to confirm this clinical suspicion and treat appropriately. Why is my dog's skin swollen, inflamed, and crusty? Is it a hotspot?
This may be a hotspot, abscess, or insect/spider bite if just the skin is involved. If there is a mass associated with it then salivary or lymph node origin could be associated as well. Willow should really see a vet to make sure there is no abscess or mass. If there is an abscess it may need to be drained. If a mass is present it should be sampled. Either way based on what you describe antibiotics and anti inflammatories may need to be prescribed to help her feel better. My dog has a swollen, itchy, pus-filled face. What should I do?
It appears as if Trooper may have developed a hot spot (moist dermatitis). He would need to be physically examined by your veterinarian for confirmation and treatment. Typically, the affected area is clipped and cleaned. An e-collar (cone) may be used to prevent scratching or rubbing. Antibiotics will likely be dispensed to treat infection and an anti-inflammatory may be dispensed for relief from itching and swelling. Is my dog's red belly rash and swollen ears an allergic reaction?
Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. There seems to be two different types of 'spots' on Baxter. The pinky raised ones look like an allergic reaction, and the type that is usually caused by a bug bite. This would also make his ears swell and maybe his face including his muzzle/jowels and around his eyes. This will go away with time, and you can give him Benedryl as well, at a dose of 2mg/kg (which is about 50mg for a dog of Baxter's size). Please make sure the only active ingredient is Diphenhydramine, and that you don't get a 'non-drowsy' version as these have other drugs that are VERY toxic to dogs . The other spots that are only on his left side, under his left arm and down his left side, look like bruising on the picture, and more of a scratch, almost like road rash. If this is new as well then I would recommend getting Baxter seen right away, especially if he has no history of a big trauma. The bruising is especially worrying if he hasn't had a big hit/accident, as it is worrying for a clotting disorder. Best of luck with Baxter.

Hi there and thank you for your post! From the pictures you posted, it looks like Chico may have a hot spot (moist dermatitis) area in front of his prepuce / penis. Some of the area appears to be yellow and this might indicate it is infected. I would get your vet to check this out so that Chico can receive the appropriate treatment. Most likely he will need an oral antibiotic and some topical ointments to treat the area. If he is constantly licking the area, I would get a plastic cone to keep around his head to prevent him from licking the area and making it worse. I hope this helps! My dog has Anaplasma and won't eat. Are her prescribed meds right?
Poor girl. Yes this tick infection can definitely cause anorexia (decreased appetite) amongst other problems such as fever, lameness, vomiting, etc. Terramycin IV is not commonly used in veterinary medicine and so I cannot say that I would use this as my first line of treatment.I would simply put Ghontu on Doxycycline oral for this type of infection, steroids and perhaps a recovery food such as Hill's Recovery, Hill's A/D, or liquid Rebound. The Rantac can also help with nausea so that is fine to continue. Please forgive me but you will have to describe what DNS stands for, since this is not a common abbreviation or known drug that we use here in the U.S. Feel free to repost with the definition of medicine spelled out. Also the Conciplex is Vit B which should be continued as long as she is not eating well. I do hope that your fur baby feels better soon! I would possibly consider having her hospitalized in the next day or two if she does not improve with at home care. I wish you all the best moving forward! Take care.
