My dog had blocked anal glands. Are they blocked again? Should I see a vet?

Yes you should take him back, anal gland infections often take several weeks to resolve and require 3-4 weeks course of antibiotics, often the antibiotic will need to be changed, i have found over time that Clindamycin is the most effective antibiotic for anal gland infection.

His anal glands may be full again. Normally, they are expressed during the act of defecation. You are quite brave to do it on your own! Not many pet parents would do that. If you feel comfortable doing it again, do so but gently. If the problem persists, you will have no choice but to seek veterinary attention. Clinics and veterinary ERs will see patients. If left untreated, Scooby could form an abscess which is very painful and may require sedation to lance and drain. Sorry to hear about Panda. The anal gland inflammation / impaction can definitely cause significant discomfort, and thus, anorexia. I think a course of anti inflammatory medication and/or pain medication would probably help considerably if this is the case. If the new diet also does not appear to be to Panda's liking, you might consider switching back to something he was more successful with and something that resulted in more regular bowel movements. Anal glands may need to be emptied and it would be good to ensure that there is no abscess formation that may be making them smell more than usual. Also, they can look into what is causing his vomiting. Possible reasons for vomiting include foreign body ingestion and obstruction, dietary indiscretion and pancreatitis, among others. At the very least, they can prescribe medications to make him feel better. Good luck!

It sounds like your pup needs to go back to the veterinarian. If you don't trust the clinic, I recommend to get a second opinion. I'm not sure I understand if the tech addressed the rash or not. The tech cannot prescribe any medication or treatment. If they did see the rash, they can't do anything about it. They can only express anal glands and can give limited advice. Only the veterinarian is licensed to actually treat the rash. If your pet did not get examined by the veterinarian, she would not receive medical treatment for the rash. Every pet is different and some pets may need their glands expressed every few weeks. Most however will be less frequent. This can be a problem in any dog but it is more common in small dogs. There is a supplement called glandex which many pets respond well to. This however may interfere with your food trial and I don't recommend starting it without first discussing it with your veterinarian. Lastly, your vet is correct that sometimes frequent anal gland issues can be a sign of allergies. It sounds like you are on a food trial already. Keep in mind you must be very strict on this food trial and that it will take 12 weeks to see results. Please feel free to post any additional questions.
