Is my dog allergic to grass? She's on Nexgard for fleas and ticks.

It sounds as if your dog has a skin infection, most commonly caused by an allergy, a skin mite (Demodex) or fleas. 

The allergy could be a due to a protein in your dog’s food or an environmental allergy like to dust, pollens, grasses, etc. 

The allergy causes your dog to itch and chew at the skin which breaks down the skin barrier. This then leads to infection. Skin infections are typically characterized by large areas of hair loss, redness, crusting, flaking, and pustules. A thorough skin examination by your veterinarian should be able to determine the cause of the itch so it can be treated appropriately. Your dog will most likely need antibiotics to help clear up the infection and possibly an allergy/anti-itch medication like Apoquel, Atopica, or Cytopoint to give some relief while the infection clears up. A medicated shampoo may be beneficial as well. I would also recommend he be on a good flea control routinely too. Once the infection has resolved a long term allergy medication (like Apoquel or Cytopoint) can be given on a regular basis to prevent any future problems. I think this may be a repetition of a previous question; unfortunately there is not a specific diagnosis associated to this presentation but few differentials must be considered. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would not recommend that you switch him yet as this may be completely coincidental. Nexgard is a great preventative and I would give it more time before switching to something else. Hopefully the scratching is not a reaction to it as that would be quite unusual. If the itchiness continues despite giving it a few days, that would likely be due to allergies rather than a cause of using Nexgard. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

It has been known to cause local skin irritation, but the itching could mean that it is working if she had fleas on her. I would see if there is a number on the package to call for advice. If the itching continues into tomorrow or if she's actually injuring herself with the scratching or starts having other symptoms such as lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting, etc., get her seen by your vet as soon as possible.

If it is not bothering Milo, if he doesn't want scratch it or bite it, you should monitor him today. Typically, this kind of skin rash should go away within a few days. However, if it is itchy, painful or hot to touch, you should take him to your local vets to get treatment with a cream/ointment or anti-inflammatory injection

You could bathe her with DOUXO® Calm shampoo and see if that helps. Also, limit the time she is outside and keep your windows closed. You could also use an omega 3 supplement, Free Form Snip Tips or Wellactin. Otherwise, you would need to talk to your vet about using an anti-histamine, corticosteroid, or a newer allergy medications (Apoquel or Cytopoint).
