Why is my dog afraid of other dogs sneezing? How can I help?

HAHA! I love dogs and their quirky behavior. I would say this is a behavior unique to Charlie! I would recommend to make a quiet cough sound and give him a high value treat immediately afterwards. Repeat this multiple times and gradually increase the sound of your cough. Eventually, Charlie will form a positive association and will likely stop being afraid. Hope this helps!

If there is no nasal discharge or other signs of illness associated with the sneezing I wouldn't be concerned. A reverse sneeze can be caused by irritants in the upper airway region so if there has been an increased amount of dust in the air this could potentially be causing the symptoms you are seeing. An environmental allergy or an upper respiratory infection could also lead to these symptoms. A reverse sneeze should resolve within a short amount of time. Other possible causes include a possible foreign body stuck in the nose or another part of the upper respiratory system. I would recommend that you have Sadie evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. If based on further history and physical examination it seems like allergies are more likely, medications such as Benadryl to be used on an as needed basis would be recommended. However, thankfully this usually is benign and rarely becomes anything concerning. Most dogs just have reverse sneezing episodes every once in a while without causing any issues.
