Doberman puppy cried after tail hit, then wagged. Is her tail hurt?

These types of traumatic lesions can result in a fracture of the tail which can be quite painful. Even when a fracture is not present, this tends to result in a lot of pain. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I know you feel bad! We see this happen a lot, puppies and kittens are very squirmy! I would say that 98% of the time the puppies are fine. If she is walking well and not limping, is playing and eating I think she falls in to the category! She still may be a bit sore and that is why her tail isn't wagging. I would watch her closely and I bet she will be 100% very soon! I hope this helps and good luck!

It could be Honey hurt her tail or her spine around her hips causing this pain. Do not touch her tail, and do not give her any human pain medications. Many are toxic to dogs, and can be fatal if given. Have her seen by a vet in the morning. The vet can diagnose what is causing her pain and can treat it. I hope this helps!

This may be a reaction to pain or discomfort when moving his tail. Tail injuries don’t seem severe but they are extremely painful and dogs often don’t want to move around and can cry out when they move the tail. If it’s just from the tail problem then this should improve in a few days to a week. If this behavior continues then I recommend a veterinary exam so they can make sure it’s nothing more serious. Have her physically examined by your veterinarian. An orthopedic exam and x-rays may provide a diagnosis. Arthritis, joint disease or disc disease may be potential causes. In the meantime, restrict activity to just leash walks for elimination. Consider using a harness instead of a collar to prevent stress on her neck.

She could have a tail sprain causing discomfort or skin irritation in that area. An anal gland infection would be another possibility. If she is that painful I would recommend seeing your veterinarian for an exam to determine what’s causing the pain.

I don't see any swelling, which is good, the fact that she wags the tail normally is also a very good sign. there is probably no serious damage, at this point there is no reason to take her to the vet but i would recommend monitoring pain, the wagging (it's important that no part of the tail is dropped while wagged) and the swelling (this can start 24 hours after the damage. if you see any of those change please take her to the vet to get it checked.
