Do I need a license to breed Doberman dogs? What are the local laws?

I'm not sure I completely understand your question but I will do my best to answer it. In any breeding situation, the best thing one can do healthwise is verify as much as reasonably possible. Ways to do this are to obtain x-rays to verify the health of the hips and elbows. In the case of a Doberman in particular, an echocardiogram to check for any signs of heart disease or defects is paramount. Another Doberman specific test would be to check for von Willebrand's disease, which is a disorder that reduces clotting abilities. Having Gowri's eyes examined by an ophthalmologist for CERF certification is also valuable in breeds that are known for genetic predisposition for ophthalmic disease. If you were asking about what blood tests to get to verify status in the heat cycle, obtaining progesterone levels can be valuable. Obtaining vaginal cytology (vet looks under a microscope at the type of cells) is often the best method to determine readiness for a successful breeding. The discharge you noted may or may not be normal, but in the absence of any other clinical signs of illness I would not be terribly concerned. Hope this answers your question.

Hi, thanks for using Petcoach! Sometimes this can be difficult to answer. To accurately know your dogs breed it would be based on both of Duke's parents being registered with a legitimate registration organization like the AKC. That is the only way you could prove to someone buying Duke's puppies, if you chose to breed him. Without proof of lineage it is hard. You may have to wait until he is full grown to see how he looks. There are DNA blood tests that can help but personally I think the accuracy isn't the best. You can buy these kits yourself and send in either a blood sample or a cheek swab. https://www.chewy.com/wisdom-panel-30-breed-identification/dp/127224

You don't mention whether your dog is a male or female, but I'll try to address both sexes. With any breeding, there is a risk of disease transmission. Brucellosis is the most commonly transmitted infectious disease between dogs in most areas but there is also a type of transmissible cancer that can be exchanged through breeding. You give your location as Canada, and I would say that TVT (Transmissible Venereal Tumor) is relatively rare there, but it is quite common in other parts of the world. If your dog is a male, there are likely few other risks to breeding. Most of the serious risks manifest during pregnancy and especially delivery, when the possibility of dystocia, or inability to give birth (a number of causes) may occur. In these cases the life of the female can be in serious danger without surgical intervention (C-section). Finally, in general, I'd ask that you really consider whether you feel that your dog and the proposed partner would produce puppies of sound genetics.Typically the only way to be confident in this is a full veterinary evaluation to include testing for known genetic problems in the breed. I'd also say that there are many unwanted dogs and puppies in the world, and breeding is not something to be lightly considered. .

There is breed specific legislation (BSL) in some cities in the United States and some apartments, landlords or insurance companies also have breeds they will not cover/allow. Veterinarians can treat any breed of dog. If you live in an area with breed specific legislation, you may be liable to legal action or even the loss of your pet if he is one of the breeds not allowed. By registration, I assume you mean licensing? To know the exact laws pertaining to your area, I recommend to reach out to the local humane society as they tend to have the best knowledge of any specific legislation related to dog breeds. A local veterinarian would also be a good resource. The county humane society is also the one who typically is in charge of licensing pets. I hope this gives you a good idea of who to contact in regards to Coco. Please feel free to post any more additional questions!

As far as I am aware, there are no laws in any state preventing prospective buyers from seeing a breeder's facility. That being said, you do need to be invited to see it. In my opinion, if a breeder refuses to let you see their breeding facility, then there is something sketchy going on and you do not want a puppy from this breeder. Any reputable breeder will allow a prospective buyer to view their facilities. I hope this helps!

Ear cropping is not necessary and is considered a cruel and unethical practice by most veterinarians these days. For more information about this procedure, I recommend you read the link below from the American Veterinary Medical Association. https://www.avma.org/KB/Resources/LiteratureReviews/Pages/Welfare-Implications-of-Ear-Cropping-Dogs-Backgrounder.aspx I would also consider adopting a doberman rather than buying one. It appears that there is more than one doberman rescue in IL. Below is a link to one. http://www.ildoberescue.com/ I hope that helps.

My best advice would be not to breed them and to have them neutered. This ia mainly for their own health as neutering prevents many hormone related diseases such as some types of cancer and infections like pyometra. It is also associated with a reduction in hormone related behavioural issues. If you do choose to breed them there would be no way of preventing unwanted matings until they are 24 months unless you completely separate them. Hope that helps and please feel free to ask any further questions you may have! We are here to help.
