Why is my dachshund yelping in pain around his shoulder sometimes?

I agree that Bow seems to be in pain. Although the injury could be anywhere in his body, the big concern with his breed is an injury to the neck or spine. With their long bodies, Dachshunds are prone to back injuries. I recommend to have him seen by his veterinarian who will palate the neck, spine and legs to determine what area is injured. They will also try to determine if it is a soft tissue injury or related to the bones. Until you see the doctor, Bow must have strict exercise restriction. Do not allow him to do any more jumping, no running, no stairs, no walks and outside on a leash only. You must be cautious with a potential back issue as it can have serious consequences. Oscar may have injured one of his legs or may have a joint abnormality. It is fairly common for dogs with various joint injuries or arthritis to be more painful when waking and then 'warm out' of the lameness. I would recommend seeing a vet if the limping continues for an exam and potentially some x-rays and/or pain medication.

I recommend that you have Sprinkles evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics include radiographs. Treatment would be based on findings. At the very least they can prescribe pain control medications to make Sprinkles feel better. In the meantime, reduce her activity as much as possible as that in itself can make a big difference. I am sorry to hear about your dachsund! We worry with shivering and whimpering about pain. It can be difficult to determine where a dog is painful at home. One common cause of pain in a dachsund is neck or back pain. Unfortunately these guys are prone to getting herniated disks in their back, where the slipped disk presses on the spinal cord causing discomfort. In mild cases we just might see pain. In more severe cases we can see weakness or even paralysis of the legs. This is just one possible cause of pain, but it is a definite possibility in this breed. The lump in her armpit may be totally unrelated to her pain. We could have a soft tissue growth/tumor which could be benign, like a lipoma (fatty tumor), or a more aggressive tumor. It could be an enlarged lymph node, a cyst, or an abscess (pocket of infection). I would recommend an examination by your vet ASAP. If Chloe seems weak, disoriented, if her gums look pale in color, or she cannot rest/relax comfortably then an exam at the emergency vet may be wise because she could be in discomfort all night.

Bailey most likely has a bulging intervertebral disc in her cervical spine. Theses don't show on plain X-rays. The muscle spasms contribute to the painful episodes. Usually these dogs are not lame though occasionally they may hold up a front paw from pain radiating down the leg. I recommend pain medication with a muscle relaxer in addition you can use moist heat on her neck and shoulder, then some gentle massage to reduce the muscle spasms. I treat these dogs with laser and acupuncture to relive the symptoms. Bailey needs to rest, no jumping and use a harness to walk her not a neck collar. Generally as the disc heals over several weeks to a month the painful episodes go away. Your chiropractic veterinarian should be able to help with her pain. The behavior you are describing makes me think Daisy is probably painful. Oftentimes when dogs are uncomfortable they seek comfort from their owner, will cry out in pain, will tremble or shiver, or be lethargic. In a dachshund I would be concerned about back/spinal pain since they are predisposed to intervertebral disc disease. I would recommend taking Daisy into your vet so she can be checked out and they can figure out exactly what is going on and get her back to herself. Good luck.

This presentation and the fact that he is Dachshund are strongly suggestive of a intervertebral disc disease. Possibly a disc extrusion (slipped disc) has affected him.
