Dachshund back pain: Should specialist review X-rays for severity?

Dachshunds are notorious for hurting their backs due their conformation. They have very long backs compared to other breeds. This makes them more susceptible to injury. They will often walked hunched and scream when picked up. Usually these dogs need strong pain medications, anti-inflammatories and muscle relaxers. These back issues can become serious as they can herniate a disc and end up paralyzed. Minnie really needs to see a vet for this issue. I hope this helps. Best wishes to you and Minnie!

Since Lola is in obviously in pain I suggest you take her to a veterinarian right away for an exam. Suspecting back problems the vet will want to take x-rays in order to inspect the discs in Lola's spine. A prolapsed disc would be very painful and she would need pain medicine and rest in order to improve.

I recommend that you have Sprinkles evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics include radiographs. Treatment would be based on findings. At the very least they can prescribe pain control medications to make Sprinkles feel better. In the meantime, reduce her activity as much as possible as that in itself can make a big difference. I'm so sorry to hear Hannu is having back issues. With dachshunds, a bulging disc in the spinal cord is a very likely possibility, and the best treatment option to give the best chance for a return to normal function is surgery to remove the protruding disc material. There is also the chance that there could be an inflammatory process or trauma going on. Ideally, he would be evaluated by a veterinary neurologist to determine the underlying cause and what treatment options are available to him. You can discuss with your regular veterinarian medical management such as cage rest and steroids/antiinflammatories, but time is critical in these cases and I would have a plan decided for him as soon as possible. The x-rays are a bit difficult to interpret because they are a little fuzzy, but I can see that Maicah has some minor changes on the bottoms of her vertebrae - called spondylosis. This can definitely cause discomfort in the back. I would talk to her vet about treatments that can help with this kind of pain. I am not able to evaluate her hind limbs because the assistant's hands are covering them up. Another possible cause of her stiffness is joint pain caused by the ehrlichia infection. This should improve with appropriate treatment.

Sadie may be having a bulging or ruptured disc issue in her back. She needs to be seen by a veterinarian immediately because the sooner this issue is addressed the better chance she has for a full recovery. Disc disease is very painful and can result in paralysis if not treated. Depending on the severity of the disease Sadie may just need prescription medication and rest or if the condition is more severe she may need surgery for a full recovery. Please remember there are no safe over the counter pain medications for dogs so you will need to have these prescribed by a veterinarian. Again, the sooner Sadie is treated the better chance for a full recovery so please take her to see a veterinarian right away. Without a full physical exam it is impossible for us to guess if this would be appropriate for Throttle - you should discuss this with the vet that examined him. It would be important to know if he has feeling and reflexes in the feet and along his spine as this helps to estimate the severity of any possible spinal injury. If the spine may be unstable then moving in and out of a wheelchair may make things worse. Antiinflammatory medications, acupuncture and chiropractic care may all help where specialist spinal surgery is not an option
