Is cypress mulch safe for my dog? What if they eat or chew it?

Pine needles and bark are not toxic, but the needles contain some oil that can cause irritation to the the stomach. You may see a decreased appetite, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. If these occur for longer than 24 hours, Luna should see a vet for treatment. If she eats a large amount of bark and/or pine needles, it could cause more severe damage internally and potentially cause painful constipation. If she seems in distress when trying to have a bowel movement, she should see a vet for treatment. I would try to prevent her from eating this. You can try to fence off the shrub, take Luna out on a leash, or remove the shrub. It is possible that she will outgrow it, but this breed tends to get themselves into trouble by eating inappropriate things for several years!

Puppies are curious, so they will explore anything and everything with their mouths. Your best option is to restrict access to the mulch beds. Fence off an area for them to use for elimination. Make sure it is free of sticks, rocks, etc. before you let them out.

No, I would not let her chew on any wood actually. Willow trees can toxic if the bark is ingested. Wood pieces in generally are not digested and can lead to an obstruction, vomiting and bloody diarrhea, or cough and choking.

Walnuts are not considered toxic in dogs unless the actual shell of a walnut is ingested or the walnuts are moldy. These nuts do, however, contain a large amount of fats and oils which in some dogs can result in gastrointestinal upset such as vomiting and diarrhea, and in some cases pancreatitis. To be honest, removing the mulch is your best bet. You can try using a basket muzzle (not a regular muzzle) - only put it on when he is outside and I don't suggest you leave him out with it on unattended - but in the end, removing the mulch is the best option. Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Great question! These litter pellets are made from paper so they are non-toxic if ingested. That being said, if they are ingested in a large quantity they can be harmful and cause an obstruction. Typically once they urinate/defecate on the pellets that should deter them from wanting to eat the pellets in the future but that is not a given. You will just have to monitor Dexter in the beginning to see how he reacts to them. Larger breed dogs will have less of an issue (with GI obstruction) than small breed dogs. It would help greatly if we had an idea of which species is involved. An inconclusive necropsy just means that after macroscopic and microscopic inspection of the carcass and its organs and after doing tests for certain viruses and bacteria, nothing could be pinpointed as the cause of death. Mulch as such likely will not cause such problems, however in dogs, cocoa mulch can cause seizures and coma, if ingested, or if there are chemical or bacterial contaminants in the mulch, or even fungal contaminants, then it is also possible to cause health problems. However this would likely involve prolonged exposure before showing up as seizures, heart murmurs and coma.
