How to clean dog vulva folds to prevent UTIs? What to use & how often?

From your picture, it looks like Val has what we commonly call a recessed vulva. That means that her vulva is tucked up and has a fold a skin around it. The problem with this is that the fold of skin can trap moisture and result in a yeast and/or bacterial overgrowth of that skin which is very itchy. So, I would recommend asking your vet about a topical treatment for the skin folds. Aside from the vulvoplasty surgery which can be very successful, make sure your pet is at a healthy weight. If she is at all overweight, that can cause the skin folds to become deeper and more difficult to manage.

If a UTI is not resolving with typical antibiotic therapy, it's time to do a urine culture to determine a.) the specific bacteria that is causing the infection and b.) the exact antibiotic and dosage necessary to resolve it. If a urine culture has been performed and the infection is still not going away, I would suggest using baby wipes on Riley after she urinates, in order to remove as much urine and debris from the vulva as possible. It also may be necessary to put her in an e-collar (cone) until the infection resolves, as licking may be complicating recovery as well.

This happens commonly when urine get a trapped in the skin folds and causes irritation. I recommend that you sue a medicated wipe like Dechra MalAcetic HC Wipes to clean the skin folds once daily. There is not magical way to keep it dry except to dry it with a clean towel when it gets wet, like after mealtimes or after bathing. If Rooney's eyes water more than seems normal, it may be wise to have him checked out by a vet to discuss possible causes and specific treatments. Many Bulldogs also have food allergies and some skin issues can be resolved by finding an appropriate dog food - this can also be discussed with your vet.

Make sure your vet does a culture on the urine to be sure your pup is on the right antibiotic. Then, make sure to recheck the urine at the end of the antibiotics to make sure the infection is resolved. If you haven't yet, get an xray to make sure there are no bladder stones present. Make sure your dog doesn't have a recessed vulva or a vaginal stricture that traps the urine and leads to infection. If these things don't work, there are also supplements like probiotics, herbal products, and even foods that can help. A good holistic vet could help with this.
