Can my Chinese Shar Pei with fleas take NexGard? Any allergy risks?

No worries. You can safely switch up flea medication every 2-4 weeks no problem. All flea prevention is labeled as safe for dogs but pets can have adverse reactions to just about any medication unfortunately. But these are not expected to happen. Oh no, poor Archie! Flea treatments at most should only be given two weeks apart, so if you gave them to him in less time than that, then yes it could be a reaction to the treatment. Shar peis can also be prone to allergies, and that could be cause of these big bumps on his body. You can giving him an Epsom salt bath or an oatmeal both to see if that helps with the bumps. If not, I would take him into the vet. The vet can diagnose what is causing the bumps and how best to treat it.

Nexgard is a great preventative and I would give it more time before switching to something else. Hopefully the scratching is not a reaction to it as that would be quite unusual. If the itchiness continues despite giving it a few days, that would likely be due to allergies rather than a cause of using Nexgard. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

While it's not recommended to combine flea treatments, this should be ok. I'd just monitor Layla to be safe, but I would not expect a reaction. Next time she needs a bath and you don't have any dog shampoo, you can use Dawn dish soap. I hope this helps!

Hi there and thank you for your post! Those choices are great- Simparica is an excellent flea and tick preventative and heartgard is an excellent heartworm preventative. The shampoo you mentioned is good too. If she is itching or licking her paws frequently, she may have an allergy to something in the environment (like a seasonal allergy) or she may have a food allergy. You should be okay with the Simparica but you may want to request unflavored HeartGard in case she has a food allergy. Typically if an animal is allergic to grains, it is typically when they ingest them. If you are concerned about the oatmeal shampoo, you may want to try a shampoo that is aloe based instead. Parastar contains only fipronil and should remain topical (on the skin). Nexgard is given orally, so it works completely differently and theoretically should not interact. However, I suspect that the companies have not tested the products together, so they will likely not be able to give you a tested answer about their interaction. If you have already given the Nexgard for the month and need to add Parastar for mites, make sure to ask your vet for their recommendation. If you are just trying to get flea/tick protection, you should be able to get that with Parastar alone, so again I would ask your vet for their recommendation for your area since flea and tick product efficacy does tend to vary by region. Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Love the name Tikaani and I hope she is doing great. She is certainly old enough to take Nexgard. I have prescribed many doses of Nexgard to dogs and puppies of all sizes and ages. There are no known contraindications with this product so it should be extremely safe to use. Now just remember that all dogs are different and they all don't react to the same products or drugs in the same manner, so it's always possible that you try Nexgard and you notice some problems. This would be uncommon although not out of the question. I would not hesitate to use it on my dogs although right now I use a topical product for fleas/ticks.
