My English Bulldog's rope area is red and irritated. Is it an allergy?

Breeds like French bulldogs are prone to irritation and skin infections in the jowl area. The overhanging lips creates a perfect environment for bacteria. Sometimes this can become itchy. Pets can also develop allergies to foods or certain toys or even food bowls. I recommend to call your veterinarian. They may need to check Marlowe for an infection. They often carry medicated wipes for owners to use at home to prevent irritation and infection. Also make sure to clean his toys, food and water bowls once a week with hot soapy water and rinse well. Make sure his food and water bowls are metal or ceramic. Best of luck.

Make sure that this is not from urine getting into that part of the skin and if it is, have him evaluated by a veterinarian. You can try to use a medicated shampoo containing chlorhexidine twice weekly for 2 weeks. If there is no improvement or in the meantime this appears to be getting worse, have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a good day!

If Riley has environmental allergies and his skin is easily irritated it is possible that he is exhibiting similar symptoms on the skin around his eyes. Some dogs show signs of skin irritation in this location. It is also possible that this is a growth on his eyelid. Dogs can develop growths, however most are benign and unlikely to cause a problem. I would recommend having Riley seen by your veterinarian so that they can examine his eyes and get a better idea of what is going on. Hope this helps!

Jack being an English Bulldog, this is possibly due to allergies if associated with itchiness or just a normal change in skin pigmentation which may be just transient. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

Poor Kiki is likely having some form of an allergic reaction or skin infection. You can try bathing her with sensitive skin shampoo and see if it alleviates the itch. A t-shirt or e-collar will help prevent her from damaging her skin. Ultimately, she may need to be seen by a vet to determine the origin of her itchiness whether it be environmental or food related.

I would have the bumps checked to see if they are from a skin infection from yeast and/or bacteria. I would put Henry on Bravecto or Nexgard to cover for demodex. Since he is older I would have full blood work done, including a thyroid profile. If the skin doesn't improve on therapy in 3 weeks have some of the lesions biopsied to make sure it isn't skin cancer. Especially if skin problems are abnormal for him. If the lesions are more bumps than flat hairless areas and aren't consistent with a skin infection I would jump to the biopsy sooner. I hope this helps and I wish Henry a speedy recovery!
