Sometimes dogs can do this due to minimal impaction of the anal sacs and resolves on its own. I recommend that you continue to monitor Max for now. Please, get him seen by your local vets as he likely needs anti-allergic medication and a good quality flea and tick prevention. Also his anal glands should be emptied. Have him seen by your veterinarian. The most common, and easiest to treat, cause is full or impacted anal glands. Normally, the anal glands are emptied during the act of defecation. In some dogs, this doesn't happen and the glands fill up, become impacted and could abscess. This would result in the symptoms described. Your veterinarian can Express the glands manually, flush them and instill medication if necessary. Antibiotics and pain medications are also sometimes dispensed. If Scooby is licking back there, place an e-collar (cone) on him until he sees the doctor.

Most often this behaviour is due to anal glands impaction or intestinal worms. Please, de-worm Rocky if he has not been de-wormed in the last 3 months. If it doesn't help, you will need to see your regular vet to get his anal glands checked.

Some intestinal parasites are microscopic so she may have hookworms, roundworms or coccidia causing the soft stool and the itchy rear end. You can clean her butt with a warm wet cloth which may soothe the area. Please bring a fecal sample with you when you get her vaccinations and they can check for intestinal parasites and get her the correct dewormer. Pedigree puppy food is fine. I recommend bringing him to your vet ASAP to have his anal glands expressed. Full anal gland can be extremely uncomfortable or even painful for dogs and can even lead to perianal fistula (ruptured anal glands) if not expressed in a timely fashion. Many vets hospitals will do anal gland expressions without charging an office visit/exam fee. However if the anal glands are not full, a full exam by your veterinarian to determine if there is any obvious lesion in either Gunner’s perianal region or musculoskeletal pain would be helpful.

The most common cause for scooting is allergies, which could be to fleas, foods, or the environment. Other causes include anal gland irritation (often secondary to the allergies) and intestinal parasites. I would recommend having Mindy examined by a vet, but not necessarily as an emergency.
