Why is my Bichon Frise shedding so much fur when they shouldn't?

It is normal for dogs, even short haired breeds to shed. If you think that something is going on with Bogo, for example, if he has lower energy levels, a change in appetite, or is scratching, she should be seen by a vet to determine if there is an underlying cause to blame. You can try brushing Bogo regularly, or bathing him with dog shampoo and using a dog conditioner - there are several different products available that will allow the hair that would normally be shed on your furniture to come out in the bath. If Allie has dry skin, it may be causing her to itch more. Sometimes when dogs itch more often, they can shed more hair than normal. Make sure she does not have any red/pink skin discoloration or scabby lesions on her skin. If you see these, she may need antibiotics from a veterinarian to help her from being itchy. If she does not have skin lesions but does have dry/flaky skin, an omega 3 fatty acid/fish oil supplement taken orally should help resolve her dry skin issue. You can find several different brands for dogs online or at pet stores/vet clinics. There are several dog food brands that are high in omega 3 fatty acids. Look for a dog food that contains salmon. Another option to decrease the amount of dog hair in your house would be to have a groomer give Allie a "lion cut". Hair shedding is a normal process in dogs when the hair follicle turnover happens. THis can increase due to environemnt or hormones. To help pick up some of the shedded hair I woudl suggest purchasing a product called a Furminator brush, which can remove the shedded hair so that less of it collects on the floor. You can also give him over the counter dog fish oils from your local pet store to encourage a healthy haircoat. I would continue to bathe your pet with dog shampoo to routinely cleanse his skin. It might just be normal shedding but it could also be caused by a medical condition. You could bathe him with a moisturizing dog shampoo, brush him and add an omega-3 supplement (Free Form Snip Tips) and see if that helps. The black spots could just be normal pigmentation of his skin. If the excessive shedding and spots continues then he should be examined by a vet to determine if there is a problem. Your vet can do some testing to help diagnose. He could have a skin infection, mites, flea allergy, hypothyroidism, etc.

This is common in this breed and for this time of year. You can do a weekly bath and daily brushing to help keep it under control. You can add omega 3 fatty acids and fish oils to the food to also help. I would not worry unless there are Bald patches or he is scratching excessively
