Is it safe to bake Glandex powder into my dog's homemade treats?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Xanthan gum is an emulsifier / thickening agent and is considered safe in dogs and cats. It is not a known GI irritant and the other ingredients should be ok as well. The only thing I would be hesitant to give Kitty is the garlic powder. I would not give these treats to Kitty because of the garlic. Garlic can cause serious problems as it is part of the allium (onion) family. I would find a product that does not contain onion / garlic and use that instead. I hope this helps! Baking soda and powder if used in small amounts should be safe for your dog. I would avoid using the sugar and butter as much as possible because neither of these ingredients are healthy for dogs to eat. Remember to feed treats in moderation. Have fun baking!

Hello. The darkened skin is just an indication that there has been some chronic irritation & this can certainly go along with the itching & scooting that goes along with anal gland problems. Anal glands do not atrophy, so by expressing them every week ( which I really do not recommend you continue to do ), I am sure they are now completely empty for the time being. Some people have found Glandex to be helpful. There is absolutely nothing dangerous about trying this & seeing if it is helpful for Tuti. Garlic and onions both have the potential to be toxic, but amount and size of your animal contribute greatly to the toxicity level. The ASPCA poison control is a great resource for toxic chemicals, plants and foods if you would like more information. My suspicion is the dog treats have a very small amount of garlic and it is probably for flavor. I still find it interesting that it would contain it at all and if you were nervous about it I simply would not administer any more of the treats. Some of my favorite treats that I recommend for pet owners are things like dehydrated chicken or turke. Just simple strips of meat that don't contain any preservatives or any additional ingredients. I also like carrots and green beans depending on what your dog is willing to eat. Like with most pet food I try to encourage people to find things with simple, clean ingredients. Just like with our groceries, there are a lot of choices out there and not all are as healthy as the manufacturer would like us to believe.

Great question! Oatmeal, sugar (not too much!), baking soda, peanut butter (again not too much!!!), and eggs are fine. According to the Pet Poison Hotline, "Pumpkin spice products are usually flavored with a mix of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves, and allspice. Ingestion of very large amounts of cinnamon can potentially cause vomiting, diarrhea, lowered blood sugar, irritation of the mouth and lungs, and possibly changes in heart rate and issues with the liver. Nutmeg contains a toxin called myristicin, and toxicity can cause symptoms including hallucinations, disorientation, increased heart rate, high blood pressure, dry mouth, abdominal pain, and possibly seizures. Ingestion of large amounts of ginger can cause stomach upset and lethargy." As long as there are not large amounts of either cinnamon or pumpkin spice in the cookies, they should be fine for Princess. The maltodextrin likely won't harm him. It is a common ingredient in some canine supplements. Most fruits and vegetables, in moderation, are safe for dogs. Without knowing which herbs are in the powder, it is difficult to determine whether it is safe or not. Some herbs can be toxic to dogs.

Hello, given that it has garlic in there, it would not be safe to give to your dog. Garlic in certain amounts can cause GI upset in small amounts, but in severe amounts it can also cause anemia. Additionally, your dog's food should be well balanced if it is certified to meet the AAFCO standards. This should be indicated in the label of the bag of dog food. Hope this helps and best of luck.
