What's the average taurine level in dry dog food? Is 0.3% low?

Unfortunately there are no minimum levels for ingredients of pet food. SO each pet food company can decide themselves what they put into their food. Usually taurine is not added to dog food as it is assumed that taurine is provided by red meat present in the dog food. There is research being done. Best stick with complete dog food manufactured by a reputable company, for medium sized dogs, and age group.

I did read many articles on the subject but i have yet to find a serious study regarding this that is supporting those claims. generally most dogs (unlike cats) do not require taurine in their diets as the dog's body can produce it on it's own when it is lacking, but some breeds seem to have a predisposition for taurine deficiency and this is indeed a reasonable cause of concern in your case. i would recommend consulting your vet regarding the possibility to give Chloe a taurine supplement with her food on a regular basis in order to prevent a scenario of DCM in the future, even if we don't know for sure that all the factors are linked.

All cat foods now contain taurine which is an essential amino acid for cats. Hello, neither of them are wrong or better than one another. The difference being is that the food with the higher protein is likely leaner (more energy is derived from protein) and has less carbohydrates or fat associated with it. Now, unless your dog is working dog, she may not need that much extra protein. Vice versa, the lower protein food may have a higher carbohydrate or fat percentage. Both foods however, if formulated for "maintenance" should meet the AAFCO requirements for energy of an adult dog. Meaning, you're going to be feeding the same amount of energy to Chloe, except one is going to be coming mainly from protein and the other one from fat and/or carbs. AAFCO recommends a minimum protein content of 18% in canine dog food formulations for maintenance. Therefore both of the foods you were feeding meet this minimum requirement. One of the contraindications for a high protein food is if your dog has kidney disease. With kidney disease, excess protein may worsen this disease and therefore, kidney diets actually contain less protein. Hope this helps.

It would be easier if you mentioned a few specific brands that you find you can afford and I could have looked at them and checked if any were suitable for a neutered adult female dog. Does she do any specific activity ? And is she a large breed ? These factors should be considered when choosing an appropriate diet.You would ideally look for high quality meat based protein, of at least 18%, low carbohydrates in form of potatoes or rice, high in natural fat and oils such as essential fatty acids n-6 and n-3 in a ratio of 5:1., vitamins and minerals should be added. You should see the indication on the bag for a complete dog food, which should mean all vitamins and minerals are added for dogs of that age.The lower amount of preservatives the better. Normally dry food has only 10-14% moisture and rely on this for its preservation.
