Why is my 2-week-old puppy crying with painful diarrhea?

Diarrhea can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. You could consider using A D ointment to put on the area around the anus in case it is irritated. You may find that at your local pharmacy. I recommend that you have Riley evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. See if there is fur and poop matted there and see if the skin is red and inflammed. If there is matted fur wash him. If he isn't matted or the skin is red I recommend he see your Vet today. They can address the skin and check to see if his anal glands need to be emptied. Full or impacted anal glands can cause scooting. Causesof diarrhea in puppies: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, dietary indiscretion, food sensitivity or toxin ingestion. Bring a stool sample to your appointment. After the exam they may prescribe an antibiotic and/or a probiotic. If his skin is irriated they may prescribe a topical to apply. I hope this helps. Constant crying can be a sign of failure to thrive in a puppy. If this is the only puppy with diarrhea it could be a concern as well. I’d recommend having your vet examine the puppy to determine what might be going on. They might recommend medications or this pup may need to be supplemented with a bottle to make sure he is getting enough nutrition.

Having severe diarrhea like Beckett seems to be having can be very painful and uncomfortable. This may be why he is more lethargic than normal and why his stomach seems tense/contracted. It is great news that he doesn't have Parvo! Hopefully in addition to the antibiotics your vet also dewormed Beckett, as puppies often have intestinal parasites. If Beckett stops eating, begins vomiting, or the diarrhea isn't improving after about 48 hours of being on the medication I would recommend bringing him back to the vet to be reevaluated. Sometimes with severe diarrhea these little puppies can become dehydrated and need additional treatment like fluid therapy. Good luck!

Poor pups! The most common cause of diarrhea in puppies this age is intestinal parasites, so I would recommend taking a fecal sample to your vet to be checked tomorrow morning, if you can. He/she can prescribe an appropriate dewormer or other medication if needed, depending on what is found. If the fecal exam is normal, then it would be best to bring the puppies in for an exam sooner than next Monday if possible since they may need an antibiotic or other medication to treat the diarrhea - it's best not to let this go too long, since young puppies like this can get very sick, very quickly.

It looks like you've done a lot to help this little guy. I'm sure the vet would have told you this, but make sure you are stimulating him to poop after each feeding by wiping his bum with a warm, moist, tissue or soft cloth. Puppies commonly get this on their bellies and they usually go away with good cleaning. I recommend cleaning the belly with a medicated wipe or shampoo (can get this at the pet store) once a day until the bump(s) are gone. If it seems to get worse, then you'll want to take him into the vet for an exam. I am sorry to hear about Cujo. He may benefit from a topical ointment such as Animax which contains antibiotics but also steroids to help with inflammation. You can talk to your vet about getting this type of medication and it also may be a good idea to have your vet examine this area to ensure it is just irritation from the diarrhea and not something else such as an anal sac abscess or fistula. Your pup may also need an e-collar temporarily if he is licking at the area.
