A small thread may pass uneventfully in the next 24-36 hours. You will need to keep an eye on the litterbox for it. Monitor for lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite abdominal pain or straining to defecate. These are symptoms that should be addressed by your veterinarian. If you see a string protruding from her rectum, do not pull it out. Doing so may cause grievous injury.

I would recommend using a mixture of betadine and saline or water so that you have a light brown solution and use this to clean the area. I would then apply a wound cream such as Sentry Wound Ointment, which you can find online or at PetCo. Monitor for worsening and if the area becomes swollen or begins to show signs of discharge, I would have Luna examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. For cleansing the wound, you can use a diluted solution of Betadine and Saline mixed together until you have a light brown solution. Use this to clean the area and to help decontaminate the wound. If the wound begins to develop signs of infection such as pus, swelling, etc., I would recommend having Slinky examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate treatment recommendations can be made. Thanks for reaching out about Violet and including a photo. This foot/toe appears fairly swollen. The problem with topical medications is they do not penetrate deeply into wounds, so systemic antibiotics are recommended. If the bird is not placing weight on the foot, a fracture or other damage needs to be considered, where a veterinary visit is recommended. Wounds can be gently treated with warm water and a mild betadyne solution, but still will not penetrate deeply. Good luck.

If this is superficial, you could try to use chlorhexidine pads topically. However, if this is a deep wound, that would not be recommended. I do not recommend spraying hydrogen peroxide. I recommend you have Sadie evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a good night!

Be sure you are only cleaning as directed by her veterinarian. Some antiseptics or cleaners can inhibit healing. Do not use hydrogen peroxide to clean wounds daily.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sometimes, rest and some topical antiseptic such as Vetericyn wound spray are enough for minor wounds on the paw pads to heal. Vetericyn is available at most Petco locations and on Petco.com, so just apply as labeled topically; it is not harmful if small amounts are swallowed were she to lick it off of the area, though Alivas may need an Elizabethan collar to prevent her from licking the wound to allow it to heal. If the pain persists or the wound continues draining for longer than 1-2 more days, I would recommend having her seen by your Veterinarian, sooner if either her pain or the drainage worsen. Keep her activity level down until healed, especially off of rocks and other rough/sharp surfaces. I hope this helps!
