How did a vet check save my cat from dangerous neuter surgery?

I'm sorry to hear that Roxas is not feeling well. Most neuter incisions, especially in young cats, heal very quickly and a week would be the minimum I would wait to give him a bath. I don't think you did anything wrong there. I would look at his neuter incisions and see how they look. Most of the time at this point they just have small scabs on them. As for the symptoms you are describing, I would recommend that he be seen by a veterinarian so it's good you have an appointment. It may be related to the neuter since it happened so recently, but it could be a completely separate illness. Please don't beat yourself up. You are doing the right thing in taking him in tomorrow.

Hello. I am so, so sorry for the loss of your kitty. There is really no way to know if this was a surgical/medical error, if there was any underlying health concerns, or just really bad luck that she had so many problems after her surgery. Without a necropsy, there is no way to see or understand why this happened. You can contact your state board of veterinary medical examiners & lodge a complaint. They will ask for the surgical records & if something is amiss, they will investigate. That is about all you can do. It is just a matter of being careful with the amount of time that he is under anesthesia and keeping it to a minimum and to watch that his blood pressure does not drop in the process. A castration is so quick that I would not be too concerned about this. I would recommend IV fluids all throughout the procedure. Best of luck!

Great question, The only way to ensure the safety of performing a routine spay operation is to have your small animal veterinarian perform a pre-surgical exam along with pre-anesthetic blood testing. After the exam and blood, if anything looks abnormal, further testing such as X-rays and ultrasound can be done prior to surgery. Keep in mind, veterinary clinics vary as to their equipment, so, to insure your pets safety, its alway good to have your cat monitored on an EKG/Blood pressure monitor. Nutrition is important, feeding a good quality adult diet either recommended by your local veterinarian or purchased through Petco or feed store should be adequate. The important things is that it agrees with your cat over time such as providing normal stools and volume, maintains nice haricot, and maintains normal weight. If you think he is worsening or think he is having difficulty urinating, I would strongly recommend having the veterinarian recheck Monty to ensure he does not have a urinary tract obstruction. I would make sure a urine sample is tested and his bladder is palpated to check if he is not blocked. If he is blocked this can cause serious pain and can cause kidney failure and death if not treated properly. I hope this helps! I would keep the appointment and have your veterinarian proceed with an examination and determine if it would be safe to proceed with the procedure or not. Sounds like you all are doing quite a bit already. If you feel that pain is not well controlled the addition of something like buprenorphine may be beneficial. Also, there is a surgical procedure that is commonly performed on cats that get urinary blockages. Essentially the urinary tract is changed from a male to a female shape, thereby widening the urethra and making it much less likely to allow for obstruction in the future. Whether or not your vet is comfortable performing this procedure is another thing altogether. I know many vets that can perform it perfectly well while I know others that have never had to perform it a single time. It is a delicate procedure because the urethra of the cat is so small so finding a doctor that is comfortable with it is of utmost importance. If your cat is not a repeat offender or has not yet blocked completely, surgical change may not be the best option at this time. Continue following the directions of the doctor and be patient with waiting for dissolution. You can also consider lithotripsy to break apart stones if there are any instead of bladder surgery.
