Switching cat to commercial food. Is Drools good despite bad reviews?

Royal Canin is a high quality dog food, and I would use that instead of Drools. Switching foods is not recommended, as it caused GI upset, and you don't want to make Brownie's diarrhea worse. Be sure to give him Royal Canin puppy food, as that will provide all the nutrients he needs.

Wellness, Weruva and Royal Canin are all good choices. When it comes to a canned food, look for one with a named protein source of animal (not plant) origin. Choose a food that comes from the can looking like a hockey puck. Avoid foods with gravies or sauces. These are typically higher in carbs which can predispose a cat to obesity. Avoid meat meals, by-products as well as store or discount brands. These latter two contain low quality ingredients and more fillers.

Any major brand name that has an indoor care cat food line would be good. So this would mean something like Purina indoor cat, pedigree, Hills or Royal Canin. If you want to change the food do so slowly as sudden food changes can cause diarrhea and inappetence in a cat. So gradually mix the new food in with their old food, increasing the amount of new food over about a week time.

It's really important to consider your sources when it comes to information about pet foods. For example, a popular pet food "review" website here in the US is run by a human dentist with no veterinary training. I recommend feeding balanced diets that meet the World Small Animal Veterinary Association nutrition guidelines (https://wsava.org/global-guidelines/global-nutrition-guidelines/). Examples of these good quality brands, which I recommend, include Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, Iams and Eukanuba. All of these brands have been formulated by a veterinary nutritionist and have been appropriately tested. I think Royal Canin (or one of the other brands I'd mentioned) is a much better option than Merrick. I hope this helps and that all goes well!

Your cat is not a wild cat and does not need protein only diets. They also need grains and carbohydrates in their diet to be balanced and complete. Most veterinarians recommend the top 4 brands of pet food- Hill's/Science Diet, Purina, Iams, and Royal Canin. We also recommend any diet you chose to have a statement on the bag regarding its use in AAFCO feeding trials and not just formulated according to AAFCO requirements. This means it is used for complete and balanced nutrition for a specific life stage (vs. “intermittent and supplemental feeding” which should be fed only as treat items). This means that the diet has actually been fed to a group of animals and they thrived, instead of someone simply calculating a “good diet” in a computer program. I hope this helps! Unfortunately I can't recommend feeding a diet such as you are suggesting. Kittens need minerals (among other things) for proper growth, especially calcium and phosphorus, and they need to receive them at a specific ratio. Commercial diets specifically prepared for growing cats are formulated properly, and I would urge you to feed one of these. Royal Canin is available in India, and they have an excellent diet for kittens. You can certainly continue feeding a bit of chicken (preferably white meat/no bones) along with the commercial diet, but limit the amount you feed to only a tablespoon or so.
