Why is my senior cat shaking, losing balance, and can't retract claws?

Hi, looking for abit of advice. My landlady has a lovely old old cat and since I moved in 5 month ago I noticed his head shook a little on and off. I've noticed it getting a little worse and it shakes more regularly and more prominent at times as it did tonight knocking him off balance a little. He seems confused at times and he is losing his balance more with his back legs on and off now. He can no longer retract his claws and there sharp and long too I'm unsure what to do as he isn't my cat :(

I'm sorry but since this is not your cat there is not much you can do. The cat needs to see a vet. The most likely issue is that he has kidney failure or hyperthyroidism. Without a diagnosis, there is no treatment we can recommend.

Balance problems are never normal and can indicate many things including metabolic disease, drug exposure, an infection in the brain, cancer, low blood sugar, neuropathy and other causes are possible. A physical exam and bloodwork is needed to begin figuring out the cause and the best treatment. Other diagnostics may also be indicated. I hope it's nothing too serious and that she gets back to normal quickly.

This could be a number of things including diabetes, severe arthritis, a brain tumor, infection, inner ear infection, and others. Regardless, it is clear she is not doing well. She needs a thorough visit with a vet to figure out what’s wrong and how to make it better. It is also completely reasonable and possibly the best choice to humanely euthanize her if we can’t get her comfortable. Best luck in whatever you decide.

The signs you describe can be caused by an irregularity in the spine - this may cause the bones to compress the actual spinal cord, damaging the nerves that are responsible for controlling the back legs and tail. A veterinary neurologist would be able to further diagnose the condition and propose a treatment plan, your original vet may be able to recommend one. I would be happy to take a look at x-rays or bloodwork and answer any questions you may have about them!
