How can I safely catch a stray rooster in my neighborhood to relocate him?

If your chickens do not go into the coop you will need to catch them in the evening and put them in the coop and close the coop. This will be protection as chickens can easily be attacked and killed by raccoons and opossums and raptors. If you cannot do this on the roof, you will need to build a small enclosure, put the coop inside and lock the chickens up in the enclosure. Again, if they do not go into the coop at night, you will need to put them into the coop overnight. If you do this often enough they will eventually go in by themselves and you can let them free range again.

The easiest way to get him would be to set up a live trap. You place food in the trap and when he eventually goes in to get it the door to the cage will close and he will not be harmed. The other option would be to continue what you are doing by visiting him frequently and offering him food and treats. Once he trusts you to get close enough you can slip a leash around his neck to secure him. Keep in mind that even if he comes to you once he will likely still be fearful for a long time. Good luck!

Hello! The safest way to take the cat to the pet shelter would be to trap it, if at all possible. Feral cat traps are the safest option because they automatically close after the cat enters. A pet carrier or box with some food that you can securely close after the cat enters will also work. Most people use canned cat food or tuna to lure the cat into the trap. A common oral sedative for cats is a drug called Gabapentin that can be mixed with food, but this is a prescribed substance and not one I believe you can purchase over the counter. I also caution that if the cat is very wild, it will still be able to bite and scratch you while sedated, so you will still need to contain the cat in some type of carrier. Cats can carry the Rabies virus, so I want you to to stay safe! The animal shelter may offer some types of traps or sedation drugs to assist you in bringing the cat in. If she won't let you catch her you can set up a humane trap (most animal shelters have ones you can rent) or a carrier and place some warmed up wet food or even some warm fried chicken in it. The smell is usually enough to entice the cat to enter the carrier/cage so that you can safely trap them. If she has been roaming around a new location, a checkup with your vet to make sure she is not injured or ill from the experience is also smart.

You should be able to borrow a Have a Heart trap or other safe trap to catch her. Then you can take her in the trap to get treated. Put food inside the trap and leave it near to where she is. Choose a commercial pelleted diet labeled as "all flock" or "flock raiser". This is a complete diet for most chickens. For the hen, you will need to supplement calcium, especially if she is a layer. You can offer her crushed oyster shells freely. Do not use a layer diet for both. The calcium levels would be too high for the rooster leading to potential health issues for him.
