My kitten got sick from bed bug spray. How to prevent future illness?

If your cats are showing signs of poisoning, this is a medical emergency and they need veterinary treatment now. There is nothing you can do at home for them, as cats are very sensitive to flea treatments and any time they show signs of poisoning, veterinary treatment should be sought right away. Please take them into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. Hello. It is very possible that Bingley is reacting to some of the odors from your spray. Cats can be very sensitive. But if you have fairly good ventilation in your home, & you are careful in using the bug spray, I really doubt this is the problem, & I am certain the spilled vanilla was not to blame. If he continues to feel unwell, you should really have him evaluated by your veterinarian, especially if he quits eating or starts vomiting. It may be a simple illness, but without at least a good physical exam, you have no idea what might be going on. If Bingley is not feeling better by tomorrow, I do encourage you to have him seen. Monitor for difficulty breathing wheezing, coughing, lethargy, drooling, loss of appetite, wobbly gait or tremors. Remove him to an area with fresh air and ventilate the affected areas for several hours before bringing him back in.

Flea spray can cause a reaction such as you're describing, especially if she ingests some of it, which cats will often do while grooming. Hopefully it's just a reaction to the taste of the spray, and will pass quickly. If it continues for more than a couple of hours, or if she becomes lethargy or unsteady, take her in to the vet immediately, as she could have a more serious reaction to the medication. Also, if the spray contains pyrethrin, have her seen immediately, as this is highly toxic to cats.

Poor Shadow! She is very young to be fully immersed in water, it is incredibly stressful and dangerous for young animals. Moreover, dish soap is very bad for their skin and coat and not even a truly effective way of killing fleas, when the eggs hatch there will be no residual activity. In future it would be much kinder and more effective to buy a spot on flea treatment such as frontline. Now as for why she is so poorly: best case scenario is that she has gotten very cold and stressed and her body is temporarily reacting to it. But on the same hand she may have got water in her lungs ( her lungs are tiny so it doesn't take much) and this will make her incredibly sick and is potentially life threatening. You need to get her to a vet asap because if something serious is going on it needs to be treated quickly. Hopefully it is just that she is in a bit of shock. Please have her assessed urgently by an emergency vet and take the shampoo bottle with you. Small kittens are very sensitive to insecticides and weakness and tremors are common side effects and can progress to seizures

Poor girl. Kitty sounds very ill and may have an infection. You need to take her to your local vet right away if you want to help her at this point. The vet needs to do some bloodwork on her to determine if an infection is present and then prescribe medication to hopefully stabilize her condition quickly. This cannot be treated at home, especially since we don't know what the underlying problem is. Please take her now.
