My kitten isn't eating all his food. Is he full or just picky?

She looks like a healthy little kitten, so I think she's probably OK and just being picky. If possible, I would contact the former caregiver and see what they were feeding. Sometimes they reject food that they are not familiar with. If you've done that already, or it is not possible, then try to feed a few different foods. She is old enough that she can eat 100% kitten food, so you can buy a few different cans of food at the pet store. Fancy feast is always a favorite. Don't feed too much at one time though, or she could develop vomiting/diarrhea. They also stop eating sometimes when they are feeling sick. If you notice some eye or nose discharge, or anything else concerning, then you may need to get her to a vet for evaluation. I hope that helps.

The exact amount of calories that a cat needs certainly depends on their weight and activity level, but will tend to decrease slightly when a cat reaches an adult age. So, that might be why Baluu is eating less canned food than he used to. If he did not used to eat the dry food along with the canned food, then that would also account for why he is eating less canned food. In general, we usually recommend about 5 ounces of canned food for each 10 pounds of body weight if they are not eating any dry food. Based on that, it sounds like Baluu is eating a sufficient amount since he is also eating some dry food. If it seems like Baluu is losing weight, then I would recommend having your veterinarian examine him to make sure there isn't something going on internally. Otherwise, I would suspect that his metabolism is just slowing down a little and he doesn't need as much food as he did when he was younger. That could be completely normal. I would try to change food to see if there are any improvement regarding appetite. It is important to check/monitor weight as well as any weight loss would not be normal in these cases.

Are you able to fre the same food that Bernard was on before you got him? Some kittens can have food preferences. It might also be the stress of moving to a new home that is causing the decrease in appetite. If he still isn’t eating anything in another day or two or if he seems really lethargic, I would have him examined by the vet.

If Julian's weight seems appropriate and your vet has confirmed that his body condition is ideal you should not offer more food. Some cats have big appetites and will continually beg for food even though they are getting enough calories. If ignoring the begging is difficult you could look into using an automatic feeder for the dry food, or try hiding smaller amounts of dry food around the house so he has to 'hunt' for his meals.

Hi, it looks like you're offering both canned and dry food which is great. Little kittens don't eat very much, so maybe he is just full. He may also have parasites like intestinal worms which make him feel full. If he doesnt eat tomorrow, you should take him in to a vet. Good for you for adopting him.

Hello, and thank you for your question. Young kittens at 6 weeks are going through a very rapid phase of growth, so it is completely normal for them to be eating like crazy all the time. It is not advised to limit his food intake, as he needs lots of energy to grow between now and 6 months of age. After 6 months, you should start being more strict with the food portions. The best thing to do between now and 6 months is to offer him a good quality kitten (not adult) diet in both wet and dry formulations. Offer his a certain amount of wet food per day (e.g. one can), and give him as much dry food as he wants. You can try spacing out his dry food so he does not gorge and eat too quickly to the point that he throws up (known to happy in food-happy kittens!).
