My rescued kitten has a non-painful mass on her stomach. What is it?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If the swelling is at the belly button, is soft and non-painful it is likely an umbilical hernia. The herniation is usually fat through the body wall. Sometimes they can be pushed in (but come back out) or are permanently out. We usually fix them easily when they are spayed. This kind of lump/growth needs to be ideally assessed by your veterinarian to have a definitive and specific answer. Usually there are two ways your vet can do that a part from examining it directly during physical examination. A biopsy can be taken under local or general anesthetic, otherwise a smaller sample through a fine needle can be aspirated (this technique is called FNA= fine needle aspiration). Differentials include umbilical hernia, skin cysts, infections, benign or more sinister type of tumors (very unlikely given the age). That doesn't look good. It looks like a hernia (possibly a section of intestines or the omentum) that has come out of the body and is now dried out. The other option is a dried umbilical stump. You really should try to get the kitten to a vet for an exam. It is difficult for me to say what you can do if I'm not sure what is going on. If you try some home treatment and that is a piece of intestines hanging out then you could certainly make it worse. I hope this helps. Best of luck.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Due to the location and the fact that Safari isn't spayed it is possibly a mammary mass. Due to her age it is most like most likely cystic or benign in nature that has developed due to hormonal influence. I do recommend a Vet exam for any new growths especially ones that involve the mammary tissue. I wish you the best!

Unfortunately you should take Baby to the veterinarian. Without actually performing a physical examination it is difficult to say what is causing the lump and if I can't say the cause we can't say how to treat it. You can call your local veterinarians and see what they charge for an office visit. With how young Baby is she needs other things which can add up in the cost of the visit. Cats typically do not receive vaccines on their belly, they are given over the shoulders on their back; therefore, I do not think this mass you felt is due to her vaccines. It could be that Lucy has a benign tumor, cyst, abscess, or a malignant tumor (unlikely in a young cat) causing the lump, and I would have her seen by a vet for it. The vet can examine and diagnose it, and let you know if any treatment is needed.
