My food-sensitive cat has facial sores. Is it an ear infection?

With a clean ear canal, the most common cause of tiny bumps on the ear itself is related to hypersensitivity reactions from insect bites. The inflamed and sore lesion in front of Teak's left ear is most likely due to self-trauma from him scratching. The concern is that this skin may be infected from the excessive scratching. Your best bet is to take Teak to his vet for an exam because he may need a course of antibiotics and antihistamines to manage this issue. Be sure that Teak is receiving a high quality flea preventative (such as Advantage or Revolution) monthly because flea bites can also cause bumps on the ears. I hope that all goes well!

Poor Posh Paws. She is so pretty! If the sore isn't healing, this does requires a visit to the vet. I would take her into the vet first thing in the morning to have this treated. Eating more can also be a sign of a problem such as diabetes or hyperthyroidism, which is common in older cats. I also recommend having a geriatric blood panel and urinalysis done. This may be a bacterial or yeast infection on the ear margins and spreading. You can keep it clean with warm soap and water, just be careful to not get it in her ear, and rub a small, thin amount of Neosporin to the area. If it does not improve then she needs to be seen by your vet on Monday

The sore in the ear could indicate an ear infection or ear mites if he is scratching at the ear. The intermittent GI issues could be related to the diet or an imbalance of normal gut bacteria. I would recommend switching the diet to something different altogether such as Science Diet, Royal Canin, Purina One or Natural Balance. You can also add in a probiotic such as Purina Fortiflora, which can be found online quite easily. I hope this helps! Thank you for submitting your question regarding Boo. Her sores look very irritated. They appear too raw for a topical ointment. She should see her veterinarian as she will likely need an oral antibiotic and potentially a medication to control any itching. In cats, I worry about allergies, ringworm, mites or even fleas with skin disease. Even without going outdoors, she could potentially contract any of these conditions. I hope this information helps!

this could be from fighting or scratching. I would observe the lesions and if they scab over or start healing, you need to do nothing. If they increase in size or if a swelling appears or if they start to ooze pus, you will need to have them examined by a veterinarian as they may be turning into cat bite abscesses, which are easily treated. (treatment ,would depend on severity, ie an abscess may have to be lanced, flushed and antibiotics prescribed).

It could be a bacterial/fungal skin infection or an allergic dermatitis. You could clean the area with Mal-A-Ket wipes and see if that helps. Otherwise, have your vet take a look at her to determine the cause and prescribe medications to treat.
