My dog bites my cat's neck during play. Is this normal or serious?

Updated on September 23, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | neutered | 3 months and 15 days old

Jasper often "plays" with our two cats. One cat runs away, but the other just lays there. I wouldn't mind so much if he was nice to her, but he gets on top of her and bites her neck. Is this normal playful behaviour or something more serious?

This sounds like normal, playful behavior. As long as Jasper is not injuring the cat and as long as the cat does not seem distressed by it, it should be fine to let it continue. These interactions will help Jasper learn appropriate play behavior. If your cat ever seems distressed or anxious by the behavior then you should intervene.

I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.
