My cat has worms & diarrhea. Does he need tests? Bland diet help?

I recommend that you have Dusty evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Poor guy. I wouldn't decrease his food for fear of malnutrition, but you should try feeding him an easily digestible bland diet until his GI flora is back to normal. Excessive gas is an indication of indigestion. Try Purina EN or have your vet prescribe Royal Canin GI low fat or Hill's Science Diet. An easily digestible food should help both the stool and the gas. You can also ask your vet for prescription cream to help with some topical relief back there. That does not look like a typical worm. If you can't take her to a vet, the best thing would be to get a stool sample and just take the sample to your vet for an analysis to determine if she has any parasites. You could also buy a broad spectrum dewormer and treat her for parasites or use Revolution on her which would treat for fleas, heartworms, roundworms, and hookworms. If the diarrhea continues, then she really needs to be seen by a vet. Maybe you could find a mobile vet that could come to your home to examine and treat.

I would call off to take Lydia. There are other causes to diarrhea including GI illness, eating something rotten, or a foreign body to name a few, so you can't be sure if her diarrhea is caused by worms or not unless she sees the vet. In addition, diarrhea can cause dehydration and a cat should always see a vet when they have had diarrhea for longer than 24 hours. I would keep the Thursday appointment. I hope this helps!

It could be that Ferdinand is suffering from intestinal worms. Those are very common in kittens, and if he is not up to date on his deworming treatments, I would pick one up for him. You will have to deworming him again in two weeks to make sure that all the worms are killed. If he is up to date on his deworming treatments, it could be he ate something rotten outside that upset his stomach when you weren't looking. In that case, I will give you a home remedy to try to see if that helps. Withhold food for 8-12 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, he starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away.

It is possible Coco has intestinal parasites. You would need to submit a stool sample to your veterinarian for confirmation. A physical exam would be recommended to rule out other causes. If intestinal parasites are diagnosed, your veterinarian can dispense or administer the appropriate dewormer. It may need to be repeated in 2, 4 and 6 weeks. He should be eating a quality kitten food. Fish alone is not a balanced diet for a growing kitten. Discontinue the milk as well since it may cause stomach upset.

There are many different products for flea and worm treatment, but many have the same ingredients and work just as well as the others; so there's really no superior product amongst them. However, some stores will sell homeopathic products, or products labeled as natural, that are either not effective or far less effective than the medicated products.
