My cat wants to eat but can't. Is this a serious medical issue?

I would recommend full blood work including Feline Leukemia and FIV. If that is normal then I would consider maldigeetion and malabsorption blood work (tests B12, folate and 2 pancreatic enzymes and consider an ultrasound of his belly to rule in or out underlying intestinal disease like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) or small cell lymphoma. Most IBD cats are treated with a prescription diet and anti-inflammatories. Since he is getting worse I recommend starting a work up. I wish you and Toots the best!

There are many possible causes: fever, infections, ate something that upset his tummy, or not being able to pee. You didn't say how old he is but metabolic problems like kidney disease or diabetes is also possible. If his symptoms continue then have your Vet look at him tomorrow. If he isn't urinating/straining to urinate then have him seen ASAP. I wish you the best and hope Thomas feels better soon!

Hello, sorry to hear about Tux. If he is doing better then perhaps he could continue to be watched at home. However, if he starts to have a decreased appetite and lethargy again, or if he develops any vomiting or diarrhea then Tux should be seen by a veterinarian. There is a liver fluke that cats can get from eating lizards but this is only common in other parts of the world sick as Asia and Eastern Europe. Best of luck and hope this helps!

Yes, this sounds like he’s in pain. He may have a bite wound you can’t see, or he could have a urinary obstruction. Just to be safe I recommend a veterinary exam right away. If it’s due to infection then they will treat him with antibiotics. If he has a urinary obstruction that can quickly become life threatening. A urinary blockage can cause kidney damage, and death in a day or two without treatment. It is a common emergency in male cats, so please bring him in today. Poor guy. I would highly recommend taking him in to your vet for some bloodwork analysis. A cat that isn't eating is considered to be a serious thing, because cats are known to be masters at hiding illness, unless it is something serious going on. Drooling is a sign of nausea, which can be caused by just about every condition out there, so it is necessary to get some testing down to hopefully pinpoint the problem. I am not sure how deep the scrape on his nose is, but I would not consider it to be a factor in his current illness, especially if it is just a superficial wound that is not infected. If you cannot get him in right away you can try enticing him with some tuna and white rice or slightly warmed cans of baby food for now. But a vet visit is needed as soon as possible. I'm so sorry to hear that Beow isn't feeling well. It is very concerning when a cat doesn't eat for more than 24 hours. I would recommend having Beow examined by a veterinarian right away. They may be able to tell you what is going on based on an examination, but more likely may need to do some blood work. Unfortunately, cats tend to become sicker the longer they do not eat and do not tend to improve without treatment, so I would recommend having him treated as soon as possible. Good luck!
