My cat is sick: vomiting, diarrhea, odd behavior after flea collar.

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | unneutered | 5 lbs

Hi. I have a cat that's been throwing up with diarrhea for nearly a month. It started a week after putting a flea collar on him. He wore the collar for a week before I removed it three weeks ago. I can't afford the vet right now so what can I do? He's been sleeping in unusual places too, like on top of the fridge, cabinets and inside of the cabinets.

So sorry to hear about Church. Chronic diarrhea and vomiting can be caused by many things including toxic reaction to flea and tick products. Having removed it is a good thing, but if vomiting and diarrhea continues then it could indicate other causes such as and obstruction, chronic inflammatory disease, parasites, or even allergies to food. Hanging out and and sleeping in strange places also tells me your cat is not feeling well. As a result, I would recommend further consultation or scheduling an appointment with a local veterinarian to exam church, consider blood work or x-rays if necessary, and recommend medical or surgical management as needed. My 13-year-old cat has chronic diarrhea and vomiting. What's wrong?

Chronic diarrhea in an older cat with vomiting can be a sign of an inflammatory bowel disease or intestinal cancer. The only way to differentiate between the two disease is a surgery to take biopsies of the intestines and have them analyzed. Based on the diagnosis, the diet may be changed or vitamin supplements or steroids may be added to manage her symptoms. They will check for parasite and check her labs for any renal or endocrine disease

My cat is vomiting, losing weight, and has a huge appetite. Why?

Poor girl. It sounds like she's been to the vet and is hopefully under treatment. I can't tell from your question how long ago she had the reaction to the collar but get the impression it wasn't the last couple of days. I wouldn't expect on going issues if the collar was the only problem. If it's been more than a week or so, I would be suspicious that something else entirely is going on. Vomiting, diarrhea, and weight loss are the classic symptoms that cats get for nearly every disease, so it's hard to know what could be going on with her. If her blood work is normal, I would be concerned about something primarily with her gut such as Inflammatory Bowel Disease or Lymphoma. The next step is probably an abdominal ultrasound.

I would talk to you veterinarian next week about gastrointestinal disease. With a continuously vomiting and diarrhea cat my concerns are Irritable bowel disease or even lymphoma. I would be less inclined it be intestinal parasites if Opie has been an indoor cat. I would not give the drontal today. I would recommend seeing a different veterinarian for a second opinion but Opie may need an abdominal ultrasound. If he is really have bad diarrhea and is still vomiting a lot a specialty hospital may be worth going to because the internist can perform the ultrasound. My 8-month-old cat is weak, sleeping all day, and not acting himself.

I think it's kind of unlikely that his signs are related to the flea collar. If he had fleas - which I'm assuming he did, and that's why you got the collar - he could have a serious infection called mycoplasmosis, which produces anemia and weakness. If that's not the problem, he could have any number of problems, as the signs are pretty vague, but clearly not normal. Please get him checked out ASAP, as he sounds quite ill.

I would recommend that you have Alfie examined by a veterinarian. His symptoms could be caused by food intolerance, food allergies, intestinal parasites, inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal lymphoma, hyperthyroidism, systemic disease (liver, kidney, pancreas, diabetes), among others. After a thorough physical exam and review of his history, the vet may recommend bloodwork, intestinal parasite screening, or ultrasound to determine what could be the cause. They may also recommend that you do food trial for possible food allergies.

Loss of appetite, vomiting and diarrhea can be observed with many conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have Miu reevaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment as she has not improved in the treatments they have recommended so far.
